  • I despair of our democratic process, but please sign the petition and ask others to do the same...

  • Actually... don't sign it.

Or rather... if you do, please also wait and sign the one that will come tomorrow.

It's quite important to ask for something specific when you have a petition, and unfortunately this one is a little too broad.

The action group is working to draft a petition that asks for very specific actions. This is in consultation with a former communications director for Tony Blair and the purpose is to have within the petition question some basis by which the action taken can be measured and success determined.

    Blah blah blah.

Point is... this is a great sentiment, but unfortunately too vague to really help. If we we can ask for something very specific that is hard to refuse, and get wide support for that... then that will be a real help.

BigFatAl... did you start the petition? Good work if you did. And I and those who contacted me from the action group aren't knocking it at all. We're impatient and want to see changes too. But we're trying to make sure that the whole cycling community pull in the same direction and have clear goals and work towards them. So please don't take this as criticism at all, we just want to do that which is most likely to lead to the reduction in fatalities and serious injuries from LGVs.

  • Is one of the actions for all police reports to detail the security devices on the HGV in question at the scene of the accident? such as do not pass notices, blind spot mirrors etc etc?

  • Thank you for those that have signed. 500 signatures will ensure that this petition is placed before a group of civil servants for their consideration.

David, my own feeling is that people should sign this petition (and any others). Although I accept that it is broad in its nature, it simply asks the government to implement legislation. This can then be done with consultation from interested parties who have specific proposals. Much legislation is based on a seed of an idea that gradually evolves. Specific proposals cannot often be met - gradualism is not necessarily a bad thing.

My personal opinion is that everyone who views this thread should sign the petition and support anything else which aims to support and protect the views of cyclists...
