Totally agree that it would be great to have a record of the stats, but I think it needs to be a separate person.
Most of the league players are really fair players and totally honest about things like tapping out and calling their own shuffles so the line refs job seems pretty easy for most games, but if we are thinking big then we also need to recognise the role of the ref in future games without such honest players. They should have eyes on all players at all times, without getting distracted by making notes etc.
Imagine if a match was decided by a one goal margin, scored by a player who didn't return to his goal after scoring. The ref didn't see it as he was writing down some stats but you can bet your arse the opposing team would blame him for it.
We need a refs union for just this sort of thing ;)
I think you're right. We should aim to have a separate stats keeper at each game. But if that fails to happen, let's try our hardest to keep stats at every game even.
Everyone worker should be in a union. With volunteers maybe an association would be the right thing to do. But if you start getting paid then form a mighty union.
