  • Will Shaw Taylor be involved?....."Keep 'em peeled!"

  • What are some of the tactics employed by thieves to steal even the most secured bike?

there is quite a lot of material in the various discussions here on bike locks and security.

  • yet you don't think that asking

Have you had your bike stolen and gone to extremes to retrieve it? What was the response if you reported it?
Are there local hotspots I should be looking at?
Are there characters in the trade I should be aware of?
What are some of the tactics employed by thieves to steal even the most secured bike?

is lazy, when answers to all of these could be found in the stolen bikes thread?

These are all pertinent questions to ask about bike theft and she's asking them in a relevant place. This is a great resource for info and views about bike theft as well as a whole host of cycling topics. I frequently research for written material and the internet is a great place to start. As info that you're looking for comes up you can check it out, doing what she's doing now is very probably just a step in the process. I wouldn't be at all surprised, if as a researcher, she's looking for leads here and why not it's as good a place as any. Then there are the trips to bike shops, Brick Lane etc. etc..

As to why hasn't she used the search and found the stolen bikes thread and just read that. Why should she? Firstly, it's very likely that she doesn't pay that much attention to forum etiquette as her motives are different to most others on here, e.g. she isn't driven by being 'one of us'. Secondly, she'll probably have a look at the stolen bikes thread now she's aware of it but it's also good to get a fresh perspective from cyclists now aware that a documentry is being made about a subject close to their hearts. Thirdly, we should probably be more interested in helping her get a really accurate picture of just how rife and insidious (fuelling the drug trade for example) bike theft is in London and other major cities than essentially harping on about why she didn't UTFS...

  • Hi all,

I'm working on a documentary about cycle theft for a national broadcaster. I'd like your input, just for research purposes at first.

I'm looking at several bike theft hotspots. Obviously Brick Lane and the surrounding area, also Bristol, Oxford, Edinburgh.

If anyone would like to share their thoughts, they should PM me or post on this thread.

Have you had your bike stolen and gone to extremes to retrieve it? What was the response if you reported it?

I forget the exact number, maybe 9, maybe 10, but I have had many many bikes stolen, all in London, the police have been entirely disinterested - which to be fair is probably a problem with resources and partly a cultural thing. I recovered one, or rather a bike shop recovered one for me.

I have long and highly exaggerated stories to tell of each and every theft.

Are there characters in the trade I should be aware of?

    Jews, it's the Jews.

    And also the Christians.

What are some of the tactics employed by thieves to steal even the most secured bike?

No tactics particularly needed beyond some bolt croppers, no need to hide, or disguise your larceny, you can pretty much nick a bike in broad day-light in central London and go entirely unchallenged in the overwhelming number of instances.

I look forward to your responses.
    Thanks,
    Cat

Are you an actual cat ?

  • Bully for her, but too lazy to type 'stolen bike' in the search form?

The above link is a window into a world of dozens of stories of bicycle-related heartache, which is great background information pursuant to canvassing for stories.

Hell she may even find out about people having bikes lifted from their 5th floor balconies and be able to contact them directly.
    Just a thought.

  • These are all pertinent questions to ask about bike theft

    Edited for brevity

    ...

Well said, I hate the whole "UTFS" culture that is brewing around these parts.

  • Are you an actual cat ?

    Worth a quote.

Small Romanian Tourist: do you know the way to London's famous the Oxford's Street ?

Standard reply: Yeah, head down that way and turn left when you get to the traffic lights.

Standard LFGSS reply: Use a fucking map you cunt.

  • No of course, you're absolutely right. We should wear our chips with pride and hope she just gets bored and goes away to do a docu' about fish, or sleeping, or playing with balls of wool.

  • Whens Africa Channel doing the Tynan Show?

  • Well said, I hate the whole "UTFS" culture that is brewing around these parts.

forums should by definition be open and welcoming places - thats why they exist and thats what makes them work. some of the biggest messageboards have turned into places dominated by regular posters, in jokes & hostility to newcomers - once that happens things stagnate very quickly.

  • Whens Africa Channel doing the Tynan Show?

Caflicks is jokes, I prosletyse all day and not get caught - beat the infidels and stay flashy…

Or just get rammed full of dim pelicans.

  • Some cunt stole my nice Hardtail from my shed, crow barred the door to get in.

Wanted the egg beaters for my new bike... fuckers

And they were hooded 16 year olds that say innit alot..

  • As to why hasn't she used the search and found the stolen bikes thread and just read that. Why should she?

er, she's a researcher, or whatever she is, and so she should be well versed in googling and searching for things, and it's not forum etiquette to think of searching a well known forum for a stolen bikes topic. you're not going to get a good, reliable, or accurate docu by quoting anonymous people off the internet saying "stolen bikes fund drugs". that's not proof, there may be proof, but an anonymous person saying it means fuck all to the police, or anyone who would watch the documentary. going undercover in a bike theif ring and filming them stealing a bike, dealing drugs, etc, is going to be much more effective than some facts such as. i feel a documentary that is researched by asking obviously answered question is doomed to failure, i would be more confident in its outcome if they came on here and had read the relevant info then organised going to one of the drinks to meet people or something similar, to actually have names and faces rather than john smith saying how his lock was cut and he went to brick lane and rode off on it when the thief offered him a test ride.

except on here the small romanian tourist has a clear map in their hands and is standing outside bond street station.

  • Whens Africa Channel doing the Tynan Show?

I wish I knew what that meant, it sound's funny.

    :D

  • God there's some naeivty on here.

Journalists are all lazy! Or rather they're too busy to spend the time doing all this stuff. They're stretched and they're increasingly being asked to do more and more work as more and more of them are made redundant.

Yes, this is shit, but if you want them to cover things which matter to you (e.g. bike theft) give them some help (like most of the people in this thread are, to be fair) instead of complaining about them being lazy.

    Fox (ACIPR)

  • I've had approx five bikes stolen, might be more now I come to think about it.

And Velo Libre- maybe throttle back on the aggression you are displaying?

Yep, said it before, it slowly turns into a reference library, why ask any questions at all, they have all probably already been asked in one form or another.

  • Some cunt stole my nice Hardtail from my shed, crow barred the door to get in.

Like I said, it's the Jews and the Christians.

The eggbeater™ is used in several Judeo-Christian ceremonies.

It is said to represent the one of God's several magic cocks.

  • except on here the small romanian tourist has a clear map in their hands and is standing outside bond street station.

Sometimes it is nicer to navigate your way around life through interaction with other humans - although not always the most efficient.

I could of course rise to the extension of my analogy and place an iPhone in the Small Romanian Tourist's hand, but I think you understand the point.

  • some of the aggression i'm displaying?

    I've UTFS'd for you:

    http://www.londonfgss.com/search.php?searchid=4032148

    al.

    It's all beside the point anyway. You can look at this in two ways;

    1. You can help Cat and ensure that any documentary that is made is accurate and raises awareness of the high levels of bike crime that afflict London and other major cities in the UK,
    2. or you can be a twat.

We can all see your approach.

    Yeah, shut it you slag

forums also become really boring when there becomes a party line.

  • I forget the exact number, maybe 9, maybe 10, but I have had many many bikes stolen, all in London, the police have been entirely disinterested - which to be fair is probably a problem with resources and partly a cultural thing. I recovered one, or rather a bike shop recovered one for me.

Well - I, for one, am disappointed. So much for the vaunted poo-smear security system?

  • is this what journalism is reduced to? it will probably be shit if this is your research.
i still think you should return to your former name of hostile w/e your name is. . . it suited you better

  • is this what journalism is reduced to? it will probably be shit if this is your research.

do you think you could try and be less of a total prick on this forum? if not for your sake, for my sake.
