Forget foo! Forget interconnects, green felt tip on your CDs and oak cones under your CDP. They may have minor effects For real improvements, read up on stuff, try to understand some of the science (there's a lot of it - and I don't pretend to understand 10%) and - most importantly - experiment and listen. I've been modding a dirt cheap Marantz CDP. Amongst other things, I replaced the crappy opamp output stage with a simple tube one, like this guy (warning, this guy is nuts and his site can cause you to start relentlessly purchasing crap old CDPs, which are another thing for the other half to moan about as well as bikes).
The bloody thing is ugly as sin but sounds brilliant, and I'm not done yet. Since I started reading this guy's stuff, and really listening to my hifi, and thinking about how it works, some of my more expensive gear has gone. I'm spending peanuts and just enjoying listening.
