How do I bob my uncle Ed? And will he appreciate it?!
Spiderpie, my offer of help is to use the search function. Type in wheel build, hubs or rims or anything you want to ask about. There's enough threads on here about hubs and budgets, and wheel building not to merit a new one.

Just got some Halo Aerotracks for £130 which seem nice. Same sort of weight as Open Pro on generic hub but no braking surface (which for me is a major plus). Plus the Aerotrack rim seems comparable weightwise to an Open Pro (pretty light)

Bit of a risk building your own wheels if you are an entire noob? Although it is pretty simple..
I built a set recently, bit of a weird one, On one hubs (i dont want to deal with loose bearings and I was being tight) £35 inc p+p, Campag strada £60 inc p+p and spokes were 35ish from 14bike co...

chris, it's not much of a risk if you build it up, and then give it to the shop to true it (as well as checking it to see if you did it right), overall it still be cheaper than getting the shop to build it.

Yeah fair point Ed, to be honest it is pretty simple, even the truing, just a bit of common sense and patience, which I lack at times.. ha.

Thanks for your help. I won't be building the wheel quite on my own; I have a friend who used to run a bike shop and he's always helped me out with everything. Think it might be time for him to teach rather than do.
I digress.
Ed, did you deliberately not mention the Miche Primatos or did they come under 'etc.'? Yes I've used the search function and they seem to be okay and around (if not under) what I'm looking at spending.

I want to build a set of wheels for not much more than £150 but I'm a total noob and have no idea what's good and what isn't.
Anybody care to help?
I's say look on eBay. I got myself a pair of Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Goldtec Track hubs which would have cost about £300 new, for £112. Check on the Classifieds section of this forum too. You have to be patient, but you'll end up with a nice wheelset for a good price if you're smart.
