Is it the front third (If so, this is called toe-in)? And does more of the pad touch if you squeeze the brakes harder?
Because of the way the wheel moves through the pads, if the front third of the pad touches as you start to brake, the motion of the wheel will pull more of the back part of the pad onto the rim as you continue to brake. I believe this set-up makes the brakes as efficient as they can be.
I remember years ago spending ages tinkering with the pads on my MTB's canti brakes to get the right amount of toe-in for maximum braking effectiveness.
Have a look at this article, right down at the bottom.

Why not take em off? So much easier...

Ok just to elaborate one pad does seem to be toeing in correctly however the other seems to be towing in the same direction
that is, the rear of the pad is touching not the front.

OK, I know exactly what you mean. I have put the same brake on my current project and I have the same issue. My guess is that it is poor manufacturing. Which is a bit shoddy really.

Hmmm, that doesn't sound good. I've been contemplating getting the BRS-100, but not so sure now. Does anyone know if this could be an issue with perhaps just one batch, or am I best looking at alternatives?

Been using 101 for ages now. Not the best stopping power TBH, but has nevertheless worked fine for me. They aren't exactly pricey, so don't expect really high quality.

Thanks forms. tbh I'm not after something high quality, just want to make my bike legal, and avoid any crap should I get into an accident and need to make a claim. Have been riding brakeless for a while now, but there's the odd occasion (i.e. some tool turns left in front of me without indicating) when I need to stop quicker than a skid would stop me! Plus I'm not exactly the skid master :)
I recently fitted a front set of brakes, the Dia Compe BRS 101's to be exact. However I can't seem to get the Pads to lie flush with the rims. Is there any explanation for this. It seems that only 1 third of each pad is touching. Can anyone offer an explantion for this, and how to rectify it.
