I'm considering a new watch and wondered if anyone can recommend an appropriate brand for me to take a look at? I love the simple elegant look of Vacheron Constantin but not the price-tag. I'm thinking maybe around 1k (less if possible), automatic, date. Simple but beautiful would be splendid, any thoughts?

Would you consider a preowned timepiece?

I got this but with a round face:

Absolutely, any thoughts?

Cartier first came to mind.
Omega and Baume & Mercier were next.
They have classic shapes, affordable preowned prices and are fine when the watch snobs come sniffing.
Need more info though.
Shape, strap or bracelet, stainless or precious metal, etc...

Round face, strap, stainless, I like automatics, plus the date. Found this Longines, which is very pretty, no idea what the watch snobs would make of it though (not that it really matters):

I'd go for a 70's/80's Omega Seamsaster like on #201 and #238 on this thread. You can pick them up on ebay for £250-£400
Beautiful, classic and approved by James Bond

I just bought a Tissot the other day.
Currently lusting over the TAG Heuer Grand Carrera:

After all the talk about Omegas I pulled this little worn beauty out. Been smiling all day long.

beautiful watches. i think the seamaster and constellations would offer accuracy, quality , go anywhere robustness and nods from the snobs.
is your wrist big or small? what i mean is would something like an iwc just look like you had your kitchen clock on your wrist?

@coppithat - pretty big but I don't like huge watches, prefer something a little subtler.
@Pistanator - thanks for the tip, am verrry tempted by this:

I kind of like the contrast with the silver of the case, one man's meat and all that :)
I bet those watches will run for decades.

Don't know where you live but this guy is worth a visit in Clerkenwell, especially for Omega http://www.antiquewatchcouk.com/
authenticity is a big risk imo from ebay. -

He's on The Hipster Highway!
He doesn't sell IWC though :-(

• #273
yeah he chucks all his spare cogs in the road to derail the brakless masses

i didnt mind either way about watch dial colours and then somebody i was mad about in a french accent told me that white ones look chic ,,,,,, now i am slightly more drawn to watches with white dials.
