Both those those methods mention not needing a lockring. That is shit advice.

http://204.73.203.34/fisso/eng/schpignone.htmI am a big fan of this method of tightening a cog without using a chainwhip.

Having seen the link I'd like to add the following thoughts in addition to my previously stated 1...
1) Lockrings are important. How do you plan to get yours off and on? I know you could eat the miche one as it is made from cheese, but I bet its well greasy.
2) What fucktard thought that dragging your chain round the BB shell, and thus removing the paint on it was a better idea then using a specificaly designed tool? I know this is more of an addition to my first comment, but I think its vallid as a new point. If the aforementioned fucktard would like to try said method on one of my frames, I'd like to demonstrate to him the benefits of a chainwhip to whip the shit out of his arse.
Now can we leave this stupid idea behind and go back to our chainwhips?
Please? -

I don't see the problem with rotafixing, if you're worried about the paint on your shell just put something over it first, for people who rarely change cogs (most fixed riders i'd guess) £30 for a chainwhip is a bit steep.

Rota fix the lockring too? Or just a hammer?

Can't you get a cog on much tighter rotafixing?
It also didn't damage my paint at all. -

Hammer & screwdriver, once again you can put something between the lockring and screwdriver to ensure it doesn't get damaged.

For track, not necessarily.
Anyway, I was posting in jest since even my mum knows how to rotafix.

Please?Rag under chain. The point is, it's an alternative for when you DON'T have a chainwhip.
It's also very effective. -

How often do you have no chainwhip and do have a lockring tool?
-
• #22
At the track I had neither. I didn't use a lockring.
You can also hand tighten a lockring.

God blessed you with teeth, so use them.

This is genius, dunno if it has already been posted didn't find anything in the search. It works great, much better than a chain whip.
Enjoy :)
