  • Fury over speed bumps for bikes

The bumps in the picture don't look bad so I assume it's a stock photo.

How bad are the real ones?

  • Ha ha! I never read posts relating to the Daily Mail :-)

  • Bunny hop practice, that's all they are.

  • i must say the bbc article is better written, i.e. doesn't force their opinion down their throat

  • Would be the work of an evening for a dedicated team of outraged cyclists to remove a channel of plates.

End result, a predictable course for cyclists that pedestrians could be mindful of when using the alley.

Next LFGSS tricks ride should consider going there and spend the evening doing bunny hop practice. Outraged residents should be politely thanked for asking for the obstacles to be put in.

  • Time to buy a MTB, fixed is over.

  • Lazy journalism, the photo is of some random speed bumps. Duh.

I think the next night ride should be that we set light to all the speed bumps then do a drag sprint through.

  • where are these islington speed humps? i would like to have a go on them.

Perhaps with some kind of sound system.

  • The council said that if the bumps do not work it will remove them.

    Yeah, right :-)

    Douglas Road, Islington

  • One of the routes I used to take for the daily commute. Went down it the other day and they're a massive pain in the khyber. There are other similar ones between Essex Road and Prebend Street, but you can just ride around them on the pavement (which surely makes it less safe?).

Could always just ride through the River Walk park thing that runs parallel and ruin people's delightful evening strolls.

    Anyway... Dickheads.

  • From the pics Douglas Road looks like a shared space with peds? If that's correct it must be fun in a wheelchair or pushing a buggy.

  • Yeah exactly! That just occured to me.

  • The arcticle highlight a blatant admission of mismanagement, stupidity and wasting of tax payers money.

So the council pay £xthousands to lay speed bumps on roads. If they don't work, "we'll just spend £xthousands on removing them, it's OK, it's not my money: It's your money!!!" The decision making in these civil servant offices around the UK is mostly shocking.

By right whoever said "spend X on installing the bumps, oh double that in case they don't work" should be repremanded/shot by the council (limp wristed lemmings). If one had the same attitude in a propoer business, one wouldn't do to well*.

    *Get the f*cking chop!

They should do half with bumps, half without. That way wheelchairs can use the flat bit, and cyclists can dutifully use the bumpy side. Some kind of sign would enforce it. Pefect (council) solution.

  • they should just rig up a system with CCTV cameras and lasers. if anyone cycles through too fast they are instantly vaporised with the lasers.

  • Islington is probably the worst borough in London(the country) for speed bumps. Speed bumps cost a huge amount each and cause damage to roads requiring them to be resurfaced thus necessitating more work and costing more money.

I really hope that a councillor is on a bung from the speed bump building industry otherwise no one at all will be benefiting.

  • The first time I rode down there after the bumps were put in I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing. There must be about 20 sets of bumps, some no more than 6ft apart. It is the most bizarre waste of rate payers money I have ever seen. And so petty on behalf of the council, it's the road management equivalent of taking their ball home.

  • This is going to be a total fail, when more cyclists take this route just to check out the new bumps!

  • we should take some for the team and puposfully fall off so they become labled as a safty hazard im sure they would then soon be removed. Volunteers...

    1. cyclopath
  • my lumps, my lumps, my lovely lady lumps

What an utterly pointless exercise. Islington got it so easy they can invent pointless practice. i'm claiming for my the cost to true my wheels when i ride through there later over the weekend...

Potholed? How to make a claim

    • Remember, Highway Authorities have a statutory defence as they cannot be held liable for defects they do not know about and have not picked up in regular checks – they are supposed to keep inspection records. A Highways Authority may be liable if they have not acted after receiving a defect report
    • If you suffer vehicle or other damage due to a pothole make sure the authorities are notified straight away if the defect is serious. Take a note of key details e.g. place, location of defect, its size shape and depth – ideally take photographs. Get 'witness' details
    • Report the defect as soon as possible. Many councils have websites and special phone lines to help with this
    • Get quotes for repair or get repairs done – keep quotes, bills and receipts
    • Write to the highway authority responsible for that stretch of road with all the details
    • If your claim is rejected and you feel this is unfair ask to see road inspection reports, and try again to claim. If the damage is very expensive, seek legal advice
    • Most claims may be below a level worth making an insurance claim
  • Islington speed bumps are unreal! I drive over em all day long at work. Sitting over the wheelarchs in my truck makes it even worse. Iz seems to have the worst conditions roads i can think of really.
Gonna go check those badboys out this avo.

Bring back the cobbles. Everywhere. ftw
