"Slack chain" is not just a pointless forum insult...

  • ... it's a serious warning.

Riding a bike tonight with v-brakes, mudguards, chain-pull gears and horizontal drop-outs = pain in the arse to get wheel position right after adjusting hub cones.

Did it OK, but the chain was a little slack. "That'll do," me thinks. Think again...

Now have very sore crotchal-region, toe and ego. Came a cropper on busy city street. Made a funny groaning sound as crotch met top tube.

  • deserved it b/c slack chain.

  • didn't you realise everything on this forum is deadly serious?

  • I'm gonna tighten the hell out of it tomorrow.

  • don't do that unless you want a new bb!

1/2" movement up and down is purrrrfect.

HAHA ... happened to me last january but on my SS ... chain came off after belting up to a roundabout to keep speed for the coming hill/slope. chain got caught between freewheel and the spocks and I ended up panicking and going over the front from panic braking.

EDIT: HAHA sounds a bit harsh ... i am not laughing at your accident I am laughing that it happened to me as well.

Was waddling around for a few days and feeling sorry for myself for hitting the deck, with some nicely cut up fingers.

The best bit was when walking myself and my bike the rest of the way home I had a stupid grin on my face because I had an adrenaline buzz.

  • You have to position the rear wheel just right on hub gears or you have to re-adjust them.

Was your accident due to chain falling off or an empty-free spot in the gears?

Half an inch is quite a lot.

  • i actually have a wierd unslack chain issue......came off on peckham high st while skidding just now, i have good tension too, any wisdom out there?

You have to adjust the gears every time you take the rear wheel out, because you have to disconnect the cable. Second gear does seem a bit absent, though - not sure what's going on inside the hub.

....may be what you girlfriend tells you/what you tell your boyfriend.

but for chain is fine, it is not coming off with that unless it snaps.

  • I'd say I need to move the drop-outs back half an inch. The chain isn't slack, it's slaaaaaaaaaack.

Came off twice this morning, thankfully while I wasn't going for it. I'm running out of receipts in my wallet to put it back on with, and I've been shaking hands with people all day with mucky fingernails. Classy.

  • Anyone have extra bits of half-link chain laying around? I need some extra to fit a larger chainring. email me - hotdollarz@gmail.com

  • Well, you can't have any of my slaaaaaaaaaack chain. I want it all. Plus it's the wrong size.

It fell between the spokes and my freewheel. so locking up.
