  • I don't bother to deflate it. The glue is just there to fill the gap, it's not actually sticking the two sides of the cut together if you know what I mean?

  • whay would you patch a tyre unless in an emergency?

    buy a new one...

understand sticking a cut together as long as its not all the way through, a full on split should be binned.

having said that i carry a playing card in my bag not for patching duties if it comes up again, they are tough as boots flexible and big enough to avoid a bulge for a bit.

and its not like they take up a lot of room and it aint expensive!

It a bit of bodging/bragging rights .... I would rather not buy something that 100% works and spend money when I can have something that 75% works with a bit of bodge.

95% of my bodges on any cycle kit have lasted longer than the original super duper kit. In fact my latest build is almost a complete bodge.

mind you, i have so many cuts in my Italian flag tyre I'm beginning to wonder if i have enough glue to patch it all up!

the rear Vittora Rubino pro however is in great shape, considering where it is, and the abuse i give it.
Tyre choice makes the biggest difference i do believe.

  • I don't bother to deflate it.

the reason I deflate first is to have a close look for the glass or other crap in the cut. I make sure the cut is clean before filling with Shoe Goo.

Fair enough, I wasn't really advocateing throwing stuff away rather than repairing it on a general scale, but purely for tyres where if you've torn a hole in it it's probably because the rubber is wearing thin and the tyre is coming to the end of it's life, Id rather stick a new one on at that point rather than risk starting to regularly puncture and having to repair inner tubes constantly!

Believe me most of my my cycling kit is decorated by my beautifully needlework!

  • EvoStick Serious Glue. It does need to set for 24hrs, for full strength to be achieved though. I use this for when I need a flexible join.
    Normal SuperGlue for smaller nicks.

  • In my experience super glue works quite well for glueing the split sides of the cut together, you'll need to squeeze the edges together, tho' Seems to last quite well. Only worth doing if the tyre has life in it, innit?

For gap filling copydexx is good, or some other potions recco above.

All of this presumes that no cords have been cut and that the casing is still the right shape when inflated, if not (and you're very poor and not too risk averse)- I have stitched tubular casings together in the non-wearing area and then used a very thin (silk or cotton) "boot" (tyre patch). Not necessary for actual wage earners to take on this amount of risk, tho'
    S.

  • Put a piece of stiff paper (like a train ticket or ideally a banknote inside covering an area of about 4cm and that will hold for a long time! or buy tyre boots from most bike shops that are designed for the job, dont work as well tho in all honesty.

Yeah, stick a £20 in there. Or, use the £20 to buy a new tire.

  • If you're sticking money in there then go for Aussie notes - they're waterproof

  • And worth fuck all :)

  • ...and no more worries!

  • It's probably been fixed already but...

I've used bog standard super glue and the gel stuff (which worked better)

I keep the tyre inflated so the hole is bigger, then deflate to squeeze the gap shut...leave to set then inflate again.
