Is a spacer on the rear sprocket a bodge?

  • My LBS changed out the bottom bracket on my SS last week - the old one was a 103mm (Sugino crankset) and they had a problem finding a replacement so used a UN54 - the shortest Shimano do is 107mm. They were totally upfront about this and they're good guys so I'm not pissed off with them at all.

However, it's all got a bit rattly since, so I was thinking of popping in a 2mm spacer to push out the freewheel. Is this a numpty bodge or cool to do? Putting the chain ring behind the crank spider puts the chainline out the other way, so that's not really an option.

  • should be fine, velo solo sell them for cogs so i can't see why you couldn't use them with a freewheel.

  • try it, if the chain line is o.k, and it works after you have kicked it every way hard as you can (before riding in traffic) run the b...h,
let it be known that is the only ever time I will bother to advise on mech questions on lfgss, thankyou.

  • 103mm JIS BBs are fairly easily available. I just bought the Tange one from Velo solo for not very many notes with great service and speedy shipping. Shame your LBS did not know where to look.

But yes, a spacer should work, provided that there is then a good amount of thread left to screw on the freewheel. If the freewheel is hanging on by too little thread, you risk knackering the thread.

  • Yes, there's plenty of thread... thanks for the advice chaps :-)

  • I have 2mm of cog spacers on my fixed due to my BB being the correct length but asymmetric. The only time it bothers me is when I have to admitt it on here ;)

  • if you have any bottom bracket spacers laying around crack one of those in there the same size.
