flashmobs are a pile of wank.

This thread isn't about flashmobs, anyway, but about fladshmobs. So you've all come to the wrong place. What were you going to do here, anyway?

We've hit a critical desalination point!

I thought that was due to happen on Sunday.

I guess its no surprise you choose the name "the seldom killer'
As humans beings its easy to be cynical than actually do something worthy.
And since you seem to think you have the answers, then will you wait til our planet has had its heart attack and then try and do some thing about it to prove there was nothing you could do, or would you step out of your nice comfy chair in front of your computer and do something about it.
there is too many blog geeks in this world with an opinion on everything and no action.
I challenge you all to take a stand and counter offer and create something that would make a difference cos lets face it, talk is cheap.

Just because we don't join in doing what you say doesn't mean that we aren't making positive differences in our own lives.

Seeing as I work for the Energy Saving Trust as an Energy Advisor in a regional advice centre, I think I am doing something that can be considered as worthy. More importantly I view what I do as effective. If you read my criticism again, or at all, you'd see that my point isn't about whether it is worth doing something, but whether the a flashmob action can ever really be considered effective. This is what I like about my job, I consider it to be effective, furthermore it isn't being a blog geek with no action, it's all about the action.
Not only have I met your challenge, I've been doing it for a while now. Your talk may be cheap, mine isn't because I'm not in it for some flashmob that will be yesterday's news before the sun has set. I'm in it for the long game and that's the only game worth playing when it comes to climate change.
For reference, my chair in front of my computer isn't that comfy. I have considered asking if it can be changed but in light of your words, which I at least had the courtesy to read and pay attention to, maybe I won't.

I think the kids call that being "pwned".

Ok great, If Ive ruffled your feathers then I apologise but you dont have to agree with flashmobs but please dont kill off intention. Leaders get assinated for wanting to create change
I understand people are doing their bit and I totally respect but it may not be enough.
We're talking about the extinction of our race man. and I get that its an uncomfortable reality.
And for the record I did read your input and I thank you for this but again please dont slag off flashmobs, if done correctly it can be very effective. I one of our mobs can bring awareness to 20 people then that is an achievement.
Thanks to you all for your feedback.

"We're talking about the extinction of our race man. and I get that its an uncomfortable reality."
No, you're talking about guilt-tripping us into doing some near-pointless action. Yes, you believe in this stuff, and great, you've told us about it, but please don't expect everyone to automatically agree with you and your escoteric understanding of political action/consequences.

Yes, a bit naff, but then so is using the word naff.

Have you seen the dust clouds in Sydney.....this is real!

If you feel guilt tripped then fine.
The reality is non negotiable

Have you seen the dust clouds in Sydney.....this is real!
Where's the science correlating the the dust storm with climate change?
Again, not denying climate change, but in order to remain credible we absolutely must not attribute events to climate change where there is no clear and reliably proven link. To do so is counter productive and damaging to our efforts and reputation.

If you feel guilt tripped then fine.
The reality is non negotiable
Studies carried out by an independant body on behalf of a number of governments and the UN have clearly shown that use of guilt is counterproductive to climate change arguments and efforts to affect behavioural change.
I was surprised myself but take a look at the follow up work being done by COIN, very interesting and quite positive.
We're talking about the extinction of our race man. and I get that its an uncomfortable reality.
Append to that the same sentiments about doom mongering as demonstrated here. Also not helping the efforts against climate change. I realise that you may only be saying that this is the result of not taking any action but as soon as you start saying "we're all going to die" in any context, you've lost the vast majority of your audience.

So i get that on one level we're on the same page and on another, totally not on the same page and I'm complete about this and If this occurs as guilt tripping then I apologise. And i'm not really looking for an audience or to create an army. And weather any of the contributions to this thread matter or not then I would say that it certainly generated some attention and/or awareness.
So job done.
I totally get your opinions on flashmobs and thank you.
I'm all for us and our families living for thousands of years.
And there is a huge amount of scientific evidence out there, I guess its what you choose to believed.
I respect the contributions from you all and esspecially seldom killer. Keep up the great work.

@Seldom Killer
As you seemed to be in an informed position, what do you consider to be the most important thing to combat climate change? Is it a case that small things such as turning lights off, not using standby will make a difference or do we really need change on a massive scale?
-
• #47
I would think that the energy saved from not sending 350 mobile phone messages, 350 people travelling to a destination, perhaps by heavily polluting public transport, is a damn sight more environmentally friendly than organising or participating in a Flashmob.
Anyway, from the little I have read, the science really doesn't support the "catastrophe" hypothesis.
-
• #48
Well I think it goes right back to the source of mass prodution and facilitation of consumerism as well as educating the masses.
Turning lights of and appliances off standby is all good and if the world did that it would certainly make a small difference.
The inability to distinguish between want and need is fuelled by our ambitious and media and the phsycological games created to get into our head to have us buy more.
So the project I created is firstly about generating awareness and having people take an interest in what the future can look like.
As a race we are basically a parasite to this planet and as most parasites, the host can acctually do without us. And we're not inherently parasitc.
The world business climate change summit could be a turning point in all this as world leader bodies take a look at these issues.
Anyway you probably already know most of this and I would like to hear what you think

No, it's where everyone pretends that it's a coincidence that they all turned up at the same time/place to do the same out of character thing.
Yes, a bit naff, but then so is using the word naff.
