Any experience of "eigth inch" parts?

Posted on
  • In process of renovating my old 70's Peugeot. Got crappy rusted cottered cranks that are coming off. BB being replaced with a new French thread velo orange bb (that's the plan anyway).
Don't want to spend loads on this thing at the moment. Have seen a few crank sets on Ebay sold by wheel and sprocket, "eigth inch" which are an ok price.
Anyone know anything about that brand?

  • If you use the search, there has been some talk about them before.

As far as I know, Eightinch are part of Wheel & Sprocket. Not sure what cranks you mean tho.

  • I know there's not much info on those threads, but worth noting.

If you are talking about these

They look very much like the Pake cranks. For $50 they'll get you up and running.

  • it also those Andes crank too (I think), cheap as chip.

  • Basically, you get what you pay for. If you buy this crank, you will upgrade it later.

+1 they will sooner or later be consigned to the 'beater' when you upgrade to 75s/Campy etc...

  • My wife has

    got there first, damn it!

  • Anybody seen their rims in the flesh? The have a new 42mm rim called the Julian... looks pretty decent in unmachined silver...

  • Bought those cranks, having a little trouble, they don't fit very well on my BB. Too tight, they don't go far enough onto the taper. Took them to BLB and asked, had the same problem with fit on a new Shimano BB of the kind recommended by Eighth Inch on their website. The guys told me to try a Campy, but Eighth Inch say NOT (in capitals and everything!) Campy. Ooh err. Am a touch befuddled.

    it's a bit unfortunate that it's 1/8th inch, eh?

No, it's a bit unfortunate that it wasn't his!!

  • I'm thinking of picking up one of their frames for polo.

From what I can tell they're just having the same bike factories in Taiwan make their own product with slight changes. The frame is basically (well, it looks like it to me) a beefed up IRO. The cranks look like andle (which are, apparently, but I don't know if I believe this or not, made in the same factory as messengers)...
