Navigator pista

  • track noob here. at first I thought of having a wheelset built but I saw the navigator pista's on a website.

obviously it's late and I can't call the bikeshop. delivery takes 2 days and I'm leaving UK on Saturday.

so I ask, can i fit a freewheel on a navigator pista?

I know some of you make think I'm stupid but before I make an online purchase, please help!

  • well the navigator pistas are rims, AFAIK

    what hubs are they on?

you can fit a freewheel onto a track hub fine but not a fixed sprocket onto a freewheel hub, not safely anyway

  • why would a trackie want a freewheel??

and if your gonna run a freewheel, i would get a machined wheelset if i were you.

  • i would like the option of running fixed and free, if that makes sense.

    here's the wheelset.

can i run fixed/free with these?

  • I swear to god planet x/on-one have the worst web shops ever conceived. same company but the track sections have completely different stock. PX has tub track wheels and On-one has the clinchers.

  • Freewheel + Track = questions asked.....

    thank you, sir.

    ordered now.

  • you can't run a freewheel on navigator pistas, theyre fixed/fixed link.

    wrong. very very wrong.

you can spin a freewheel onto any fixed hub of any make.

  • You can still put a freewheel onto the hub though, same thread. Just wouldn't have as much thread to screw onto to still enough.
Braking surface would be more of an issue, although they do have a raised surface it doesn't work well with brake pads (I tried it once!)

so that means get the on-one clincher set instead.

  • my mistake

  • There's a navigator "street" wheel, with a braking surface.

Can't find it right now, but its out there somewhere.

Incorrect. I had fixed/free on mine

thanks! just the answer I need. I thought I have to cancel that order.

  • Just to ask do you need to use a specific singlespeed wheel such as the Navigator or could like I want to, convert my Campgnolo Eurus road bike wheels for single speed use.

  • so that means get the on-one clincher set instead.

Good point, although the question was specifically about Navigator Pista's

Lots of options for same/cheaper if that's what was asked for.

You can use your road wheel, yes - Buy a SS conversion kit, which includes a cog, spacers (and lockring?), and chain tensioner. Some may come with a chainring and chain as well...

I'd really like to have deep v's and these are the cheapest I can find and the reviews are OK. DT Swiss V's are 60 pounds per rim. And Velocity are 50 pounds each.

Back home, Velocity deep v's on Dia Compe hubs + spokes are 270 pounds!!

  • I weigh around 98Kg (15st++). do you think I should just cancel this and go for a different option?

**I don't jump curbs and Singapore does not have deep potholes.

  • Why would you be running a freewheel on trackwheels though? They also have no braking surface...

  • And don't worry, the decals should peel off (one by one if like the track Navigators) very easily if you don't want the word 'Street' on your rims

  • I have the navigator pistas, had them a year and I rate them. Lasted longer than my frame did :/, havent needed trueing, although that is probably down to a good build. I weigh 16 stone.
Mine were machined, just painted over black, the paint comes off fairly quickly when you brake on them, but initially the braking is very weak.
Edit: the decals do just peel off.

but check the spacing on your frame. A road wheel is 130 and if you have a track frame it would be 120. Only 10 mm but not always easy to reduce with a QR axle.

Obviously ignore me if you know all that and have a 130 spaced frame :-)
