  • Do we have a venue for this yet?

  • Hi All,
Sorry we havent confirmed the venue yet! We are waiting to hear back from a really good place in Hackney, and if we cant get that, maybe a place in Chiswick.
Im offline tmrw but Ulfrasia will post to confirm as soon as we know.
    Sorry to keep you hanging...

  • This is a great idea guys! I dont really know the ins and outs of it all, but can gather the premise of it all from the title.
Good on you, I hope something positive comes from your first meeting, there may be more needed, just persevere. Please give updates of developments.
    All the best.

  • Each individual case is covered but rarely, if ever considers similar cases. What the Toronto enquiry provided was an overview of all fatal incidents, common affecting factors, etc over a long period. Instead of campaigning based on anecdotal and single event evidence, people were then able to work from meaningful analysis and statistics* for future action. It may seem harsh to say this but there is little value in taking action based on a unique element or factor with a low perceived reoccurence. You're never trying to prevent the death that just happened, only those that might happen in the future.

*I realise that statistics around the loss of life is often uncomfortable territory. We inevitably have an emotional attachment to the face on the accident. However, statistics are good for guiding us on what to campaign for, emotion guides us well in why we're campaigning for it.

I don't have the details to hand, but this has been done. The recommendation was that an interim ban on heavy good vehicles during peak hours should be considered as a priority whilst other measures were discussed.
I can't for the life of me think where I read it or which organisation published it, but it was government led, possibly medical health driven.

i'm in the process of updating this report, with a bit of added info. hope that it will be published within the next few months.

i can also help with other statistics if people want...

  • I don't know whether it's been mentioned already, but there are already restrictions on HGVs in cities like Paris and Dublin. I haven't found anything for Paris yet, but here's some information on Dublin: http://www.dublincity.ie/RoadsandTraffic/HGV/Pages/HGV%20Management%20Strategy.aspx

  • Hi Sparky,

Jimmi offered to help with any sign making. Maybe you two could work together? Hope you can come Tue.

I'm not London-based anymore, so I won't be able to make the meeting. However, I'm very keen to make a fuss on the plinth.

Jimmi - would you be up for helping with a sign? Do you work at a printers?

  • Hi Kate,

I've got a friend in City Hall who knows who you are from dealings on your video etc. and how dedicated you are. His advice is for the action group to get itself together (i.e. develop its proposals/plans) and then to arrange a meeting with Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's Transport Advisor, to discuss its ideas for making the roads safer. He thinks he's likely to be receptive (more so than approaching TFL itself) as he is apparently keen to engage with some cycling groups other than just the LCC. So this could be a very timely initiative.

    Hope this helps.

  • But TV costs a fortune, yes it has most impact but therefore it's the most expensive medium going.

TV doesn't have to cost a fortune though. The broadcasting companies don't actually have to charge for airtime if they don't want to and it's not outside the realm of possibility for them to support action if they see it as a worthy cause. Don't disregard this avenue. If you come up with a good proposal and a good pitch, they may be prepared to listen.

This does sound like a good idea, not only because it tallies with what I have been thinking!

IMO what is needed at this point is a champion for this cause in an official capacity, identifying that champion is an important step in deciding the strategy for convincing the champion to take up the cause.

BJ is the obvious choice for many reasons.

Having a target gives definition to what is required at this stage.

We all want to achieve something significant with this, but it is not going to happen in one step.

To me the first step is to gain support outside of our peer group / special interest group from individuals who can bring pressure on those agencies who can affect change. That means London MPs, the London Mayor and local London politicians.

Hopefully not coming over too Bikeradar.

  • ...is there anyone coming tomorrow who can take minutes?

    Emma C

  • I'm afraid I can't attend now

  • Hi guys. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting any of you yet - but pop in from time to time. If I can help in any way I will> I am at Goldsmiths and have radio production / film editing skills, and we are setting up a cycling society this year so anything we can do to help - count me in.

Even if it means trying to make some videos to get the message out - or short docs, or whatever.
Not sure how else I can help.......I have some experience of fundraising by putting on events - maybe we could raise the funds to get a project underway, really doesn't cost a lot to make a decent video and id happily donate my time to doing so- interview the MPs, cyclists, drivers, people who have been affected by accidents, then release that into the media and virally..........try put some pressure on? Film some hotspots in London and do demonstrations of what could go wrong / why these junctions are dangerous etc....

Just reeling off some thoughts here. Let me know if there is any way i can help.
I've had too many close calls and heard too many tragic stories of accidents that shouldn't have happened.

  • Don't reckon I can get there much before 7, so I'm out I guess. I'll keep an eye on these minutes.

    @ Kate & co

Are you happy for people to turn up late, or will that be too disruptive?

at the end we will get into working groups and start planning action to go forward.
