  • LCC groups and some local councils used to organise Car-Free Days in London in the early noughties. The LCC in Hackney did it in Shoreditch three times (2001, 2003, and 2004) and in Mare Street in 2002. It was a huge amount of work for small groups of volunteers but was never supported by the Government and these efforts effectively petered out.

    Freewheel is something that gets much closer to the spirit of car-free days in European cities--it's especially interesting to pootle around in the streets just around the 'route', which is what I did for a good while today before joining the throng on the main drag. Try it next time--it's much more of an eye opener than the organised cavalcade.

    With a little luck and greater numbers, this will eventually morph into a proper car-free day.
