Britain needs a national no-car day. It'd be amazing!

Weird thing was all the bikes were stopping at red lights!
Something I rarely do for the other 364 days of the year. I almost felt bad with all those families stopped waiting for the lights to change, didn't stop me tho :D
I hope all the littluns said "Papa, I wanna remove my derailleur n jump red lights like that dick head".

It's no car day in Brussels today.
It's sweet, bikes are everywhere, it's like some kind of utopia. Everyone looks happy for a change.
No cars are allowed to drive within the Brussels Ring between 09:00-19:00 - kinda like the equivalent of the M25 (only smaller).
It's been European Mobility Week all over Europe.

A no-car day would be great, guess closest here would be London Freewheel but not quite the same and the "freewheel" bit seems slightly inappropriate :) A few months ago I remember London Bridge was closed for some reason but they left it open for peds, just cordoned off the road. That was quite a weird feeling as the bridge was totally empty apart from maybe one or two other cyclists, I just rode around in the middle of the bridge for a bit and did a couple of skids until the novelty wore off.

LCC groups and some local councils used to organise Car-Free Days in London in the early noughties. The LCC in Hackney did it in Shoreditch three times (2001, 2003, and 2004) and in Mare Street in 2002. It was a huge amount of work for small groups of volunteers but was never supported by the Government and these efforts effectively petered out.
Freewheel is something that gets much closer to the spirit of car-free days in European cities--it's especially interesting to pootle around in the streets just around the 'route', which is what I did for a good while today before joining the throng on the main drag. Try it next time--it's much more of an eye opener than the organised cavalcade.
With a little luck and greater numbers, this will eventually morph into a proper car-free day.

Whilst the Skyride/Freewheel thing wasn't really my thing, was impressed by the opportunity it provides those less confident on the roads with an opportunity to try things out. Definitely a step in the right direction if we are to make the city more cycle friendly...

The City on the weekend would actually be really cool to ride around in. I've been thinking about taking Mal there. There's bugger all traffic, there's interesting buildings, it's close to funkier stuff should you require beers/food/shopping, etc.

yup Sunday morning/early afternoon is when I do tours of 'the city' by bike for US and .eu friends who visit/stay. for some it has led to them riding more later on :) a real eye opener 'wow saw so much in those few hours, couldn't have done it any other way'.
recommended.

I think she's far more comfortable in traffic now than the first Hovis Freewheel so riding from way out west to the City might not be such a problem. Thing is, last thing I want to be doing on weekends is riding to work ;)

You'll want to do Barry Mason's 'Deserted London' Christmas Day ride, then, if you're in London. I never am in London at that time, but it's reported to be spectacular how empty it is.

I did the Xmas Day forum ride last year.. I was actually surprised at how many people were still around!
I guess all the tourists that are over here aren't going to lock themselves in their hotels to celebrate xmas so they were swarming all over Hyde Park and that We Will Rock You palace thing..
It's obviously quieter than normal I agree. It looks like I'm not going to Oz for this Christmas A-FUCKING-GAIN! so I'll probably do another xmas ride. Might bring Mal along this time.

Yeah streets like Oxford St. are amazing at like 6am... I've got memories of leaving house parties at that time and riding down the middle of the road with a massive smile covering the fact I look and feel like shit.
