Critical Mass / tank at G20 call for witnesses

  • Hello,

At the G20 protests in the City on April 1st 2009, as 11 people in a "tank" (actually an armored personnel carrier, but tank sounds better!) were pulled over on Bishopsgate, a mass of people on bikes pulled up to see what was going on.

Were you cycling (or walking!) on Bishopsgate at the time the "tank" drove through / got pulled over? Did you see the "tank" at any point on April 1st?

The 11 people from the vehicle were later arrested! Their solicitors are calling out for witnesses (not to the arrests necessarily, but just anyone that saw the vehicle and / or its occupants).

Basically - if you saw this vehicle and its rag-tag assortment of characters - did you think they were real police-people?!

Please contact Mr. Raj Chada of Hodge Jones + Allen LLP rchada@hja.net or 020 7874 8300

  • I thought they looked like a right bunch o' cunts.

  • They arrested me and asked for a £100 on the spot fine some rizla's and 4 cans of Nelson Mandela, looked like coppers to me.

    Explain.

  • Explain.

  • So, er, no one saw nothing then?

  • Come on people if you can help? PS

  • .

  • please keep this thread serious - it's important. PM me if you need an explanation.

  • it wouldn't have been critical mass as the 1st april was a weds
    critical mass is fridays

  • As far as I know it was a special Critical Mass for the whole G20 palaver. Were plenty folks about.

If you were there but aren't sure about contacting the solicitors, if you don't think you saw much or don't know if what you saw would be useful, just get in contact with vannen or me. Or fred? (Sorry, I don't know who you are!) Any info is potentially useful :).

  • Can one of you Space Hijackers go and pick up the discarded rafts that were dumped in the canal after Sunday's race?
You seem like a bunch of middle-class hypocrites going on about what other people should do, yet leaving a load of plastic floating in Regent's canal.

  • So let me get this straight; at an organised cycle ride in wake of the G20 protests, some people decided to dress as police and drive a tank around London. Police, who continuously live in a state of terror emergency code amber or red, decided this wasn’t what they liked to arrested those involved for impersonating police so witnesses are needed to say “no they didn’t look like police”

Are these the same people who rode a tank around to free hackney?

Don’t get it but this isn’t the place to debate it. I saw it at the G20 demonstrations and it was clearly a relic and miles away from the modern army/police kit. If you get no responses can’t you dig up the fact nobody got arrested at classic army vehicle rallys AND how most hired security firms look and act more like police than you did?
    best of luck

+1 and yes it was the same lot who rode the tank to hackney and had a tea party or summat. they're a nice bunch but wildly detached from reality in some of their stunts. that said, some of their actions are pretty fun(ny), and i have been involved with some in the past.

i was too busy patching up people's faces and torsos after police baton charges to notice the tank :-(

  • i was working in the city as a courier that day and i did see a very strange 'tank' type armoured vehicle thing with police written on it - i thought it was a bit strange at the time because i'd never seen one like it before but assumed they just keep it for sunday best - didnt see it getting pulled over

  • @606- If any stuff was left behind from the raft race we'll pass word around and try to get it picked up. It wasn't a Space Hijackers outing, just happened to have a couple of SH bods in it. It would be hypocritical if they'd left the stuff there out of negligence, but I'm sure they either couldn't get to it or didn't know it'd been left behind... PS I'm very much a working-class type, and get a bit bored of the middle-class tag...!

@ Greasy Slag - the only reason I posted a thread here is because loads of fixed / single-speed people would have been in Bishopsgate with the Mass (or otherwise). I know it seems a bit off-topic to be talking about a great big old "tank" in a cycling forum! (And obviously the reason I'm a member here is because of the amount of speeding around I do on my 25 year-old Peugeot fixie...) Greasy Slag, you're EXACTLY the sort of person the solicitors are keen to speak to. So in that sense, there's been one response. It's up to you of course whether you can be bothered sending an email or calling the solicitors.

Finally, @JV - it didn't have police written on it!

  • ooops must of the been the real filth after all then

No problem. Good luck with the case.

There were a lot of fixer skiders present, we are all doing our part by reducing the amount of metal needed to produce bikes, in our own way we will save the planet.. one brake cable housing at a time
