The other component choices create an expectation of what should be where to create a stylistically homogeneous whole; on that particular Mercian, the Thomson looks out of place. Optimum seat post, assuming the owner takes my advice and swaps cranks with the Pinarello, would be a Campag Record round single bolt one. To go with the stem, however, a Nitto would work. Given that the Kalloy clone of the Nitto 626 would be indistinguishable at a distance, that too would be better than the Thomson, speaking purely from an aesthetic point of view. Of course, the Thomson is a functionally excellent post, it just belongs on a more modern looking build than that Mercian.
