I live up north and commute to work by bike.
Thankfully road conditions here are not as bad as London.
I've been heart broken when reading about these tragedies on the forum. It seems to me we need a national TV led campaign akin to the one that the government ran in the early 80s when compulsory seat belt wearing was introduced. These featured Jimmy Saville and the "Clunk click every trip" strapline. I remember these being shown ad nausaum at the time as a way of drumming the message home. I was reminded of them by a recent article on the BBC website.
I think it needs to be a national campaign, stuff thats happening in London now happens in the rest of the country sooner or later. Cycle use is on the increase up and down the country.

Yes, the problem is even though your man says ""This year the capital has already seen four cyclists lose their lives. We have to continue to educate all road users in the hope that injuries and deaths will be reduced."
All the keep doing is 'educating cyclists'. I dont see any measures to educate drivers, or construction companies, or haulage companies. Implicit in that is the inherent and ubiquitous assumption that it is the cyclsits fault. Look at all the action in this area, I have seen nothing that is not aimed at cyclists.

hows about the sticker campaign but not on lamp post, why not the backs of lorries?
then any cyclist behind it might think about getting to close
what you think?
saw the back of a lorry where someone had written in the dirt on the left of it 'suicide', and was a little puzzled - looked over to the right side and saw 'overtaking side' - n thought that was a really cool, useful thing to do. A comp to get schoolkids n teenagers to design stickers to raise t profile might be good. I'm a lecturer in Art and Design and a would-be illustrator, and have no useful political skills or contacts, but will come anyway, just in case.

i see from lushes post the solution 'fresnal lenses' will help....i'm spetical and sounds like bit of a media stunt to me. at a couple of quid each it is not really a intregrated apporach to solving the problem. also research in denmark (serious about this problem) showed that a good % of accidents were asscioated with driver being unaware over being unable to see. potentially, it could be argued that these are good 'media spin' items which are cheap. and more serious solution would be http://www.see-mi.dk/ or similar. are not we arguing that the solutions proposed by DfT / TfL...etc are not good enough as the problem is growing?? therefore they need to dedicate more resources - and the message it 'what you're doing is not good enough so try harder...cyclists are still being killed'
Fresnel lenses aren't bad as a quick fix but of course more is needed. There is an EU standard for mirrors which a lot of sustained campaigning by the HGV group (chaired by LCC and involving RoadPeace, CTC, Living Streets) has helped become law, although it was watered down in the UK not to apply to lorries registered pre-2000. All aimed at both prevention and, in the less likely event of a collision, aimed at assisting in clearly establishing fault.

There are a few variances on this apppearing on trucks now. I assume it is down to the individual haulage company. There was (lengthy) discussion about this and different messages put forward on the first HGV thread last year.
I still think they are a cheap and pretty effective measure that at least makes the cyclist more aware, if not solving any of the other issues. -

I still think they are a cheap and pretty effective measure that at least makes the cyclist more aware, if not solving any of the other issues.I would agree, we have all learned through experience the vunerable road positions but it's not obvious to those starting out. I would be interested to see a comparison of motor cyclist deaths due to HGVs (a group that has undertaken relatively comprehensive training).
To avoid putting all the responsibilty on the cyclist for their safety, it would need to be backed up by HGV driver training. Take the point of view of a HGV driver, they are probably unfamilar with the road layout (they do not have regular commute) and while they may have had training and gained experience driving on A roads and motorways and even other cites, London traffic is very different (tight clearances, many cyclists passing both sides).

But TV costs a fortune, yes it has most impact but therefore it's the most expensive medium going. The fact is Government is going to spend the big money on things which kill at least hundreds or more of people - like drinking driving, smoking etc. With cuts across the board coming up what are the chances of getting them to commit to additional spend on this?
It would be great to do something a bit like This video - their budget was £2k but it's gone round the world and has got their campaign loads of attention. I'm sure with all the skills forum folks have something this good could be produced. Not necessarily that shocking or showing an accident, but in my opinions TfL's video on the subject is far too safe, it needs something with more impact.
On a similar Policing theme; I don't know how much involvement LCC and others have with the police in terms of accident prevention but I sure the Roads Policing departments of the London forces may be interested in having an input.
The City of London Police, at least, are clearly aware of the problem of HGVs. It may be useful trying to contact Inspector Mountford and his Met counterpart.
Just a thought...
