    York: Tuesday morning @ 08:30
Bin lorry didn't see me and turned right into me at road junction.
    No time to avoid.
Managed to hit him sideways on, and "shoulder-barge" rather than head on collision.

Smacked the windscreen with the side of my helmet, then bounced off and down.

    Result:

    • fractured windscreen (aww)
    • bruised shoulder
    • twisted bars
    • a few cuts and bruises
    • a very apologetic company manager offering to pay for repairs asap.

I didn't report to the Police, but have witnesses and photos and admission from driver.

I just consider myself lucky, and will probably get the price of a nice new pair of wheels out of them (and a replacement helmet!)

    Any recommendation on wheels then?

  • u got off so lucky, well played sir!

  • glad to hear you're ok

  • Jeeeeeeeeez! Thats feckin lucky.

  • Wow, nice save, would have been terrible to hear of another cyclist going down recently.
    OPEN PROS btw

  • Zipp 808 tracks?

  • Report it to the police, the driver may not have noticed you because he was legally unfit/unsafe to be on the road. At the very least report it the council so that his supervisor is aware.

  • It can´t just be about a very apologetic company manager offering to pay for repairs asap, seriously! What next??... A guy driving around the city on that beast truck, that FAILS TO SEE CYCLISTS/pedestrians/motorbikes/whatfuckingever shouldn´t even be there in the 1st place. This stuff can´t just happen!

  • I am ex York and will be visiting soon, worth bringing my bike?

I really think you should report this incident to the police. ' Sorry - here have some cash ' is not good enough.

I'm ex-York too. Grew up in Huntington.

I usually take my bike up on the train when I go to visit my folks.

    Correct.

  • Don´t worry about a new set of wheels, think about the next time this same thing can happen to somebody less fortunate to tell us the story. You´re entitled by their insurance company to a new bike if you so demand. If they´re professionals they need professional training to drive those war tanks. Bless you.

  • Thanks guys. I'm off to the police tomorrow morning, as well as to A&E to get stiff shoulders / neck and bruised knuckle looked at.
Adrenaline is a decent analgesic! But two days on I'm a little stiff and sore and reckon I really ought to get it "formalised".

Pistanator got barred out of there for calling the landlord a soi-disant faux Yorkshireman.

You heading from the minster, town the river or kings manor when you were turning? glad to hear your not too worse for wear. Council drivers are on the whole knobs when it comes to overtaking etc. although i once had a spill when a bin lorry did a turn in the road, but it was me skidding to a halt and then forgetting to unclip! thought i was in for all kinds of banter but one of the bin men ran over and said "you alright pal? i always do that with my bloody clipless shoes" laughed my ass off.

on another note im surprised it wasnt those f'in ftr bendy bus bastards.

if you ever fancy a ride there are a few of us riding fixed in york, http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=45850685995&ref=ts

wheel wise, i had a wheel built at fulford cycles which wasnt bad, but they forgot to ring and i had to point my wheel out when i went in! but the wheel has stood up and they are the cheapest! cycleworks, trotters or cycle heaven would be a good choice

  • ^^ Cycle Heaven seem the best of that choice to me - good guys.

Trotters were awful last time I went in, just really rude - shame as I used to buy a lot of BMX stuff there in the 80's.

Fulford cycles game me a ridiculous quote on a wheel build so I never followed up.

Nice to hear there are some York fixed riders - I get up often to see the folk - always happy to share a curd tart if you guys are around?

Ps - ex-pat scot glad to hear you came off OK.

  • Skelator - I was riding from the Minster along the crossroads at Museum st towards Lendal Br when the bin lorry turned into me. My right of way.

Cycle Heaven and Cycleworks both seem decent people. Not been to Fulford (not my neck of the woods).
I come in from near Helmsley - about 20 miles each way, with a 1-in-6 to keep me from getting complacent. I spin along the flats through the Vale of York doing around 21-22 mph on 42 x 16 - if it wasn't for the hills near home I'd fit a larger gear...

  • This isn't particularly directed at the op, but people always think the wrong thing when drivers offer them money, particularly when the driver is at fault/dangerous.

Instead of thinking 'how generous of you', you should be thinking 'why is this person trying to buy me off'.

there is some lovely riding to be had north of york, is that your daily commute? if so im very jealous, i know the hills of which you speak, last time i tackled them i had 42 - 16 and it was do able with some effort, certainly the best all round gear, and spinning the rest is fantastic.

No matter what people say about taking money, imo if your not too badly hurt (ie graze and cut) and the offer is fair and you know the driver will be disciplined then i dont see a problem. in the eyes of the law, offering a payment is bordering on an admission of fault. the only problem, if any is that if injuries develope further down the line (ie muscular) which require physio then legal is the best way to go, otherwise count yourself lucky, and take the money.

  • Sounds like wearing a helmet was a good idea!
