Oh, and could we have the date and time of the meeting displayed somewhere prominent please (like in the first post, or thread title), for the benefit of the stupid and disorganized? (Like moi.)
Yes please!

The simple essence of this issue is that we have to look after ourselves and each other. The one thing we can start right now without delay or major expense is the proactive education of our fellow riders and other road users about the risk they pose themselves and others in the specific situations that have lead to so many avoidable tragedies of late. I think the idea of developing a high impact (fact based, non-preachy) flyer/leaflet is an excellent one.
We can all carry a wad of these around and distribute to fellow cyclists and HGV drivers. We could even provide those stickers warning not to undertake to lorry drivers to place on the rear of their vehicles. They’re not some evil breed-apart. I’m sure the vast majority will appreciate us helping them to help us.
I’m sure we’ve got all the design and copywriting resource we need available to us amongst the members of our forum. I also expect there will be some council funding available to cover printing costs if we approach them. I’ve got a friend who works for Boris doing press on transport issues so I’ll approach him about this issue.
It only took me explaing to my wife ONCE about this risk and she has learnt NEVER EVER EVER to put herself in that situation. Spreading the knowledge is highly effective.
Do the math… say even only 10% of active forum members take this up, with each passing the information to just ONE road user per day, we could raise awareness among over ¼ million people within a year. If the idea spreads across other rider communities then the impact could be many times greater. -

I won't put my name down for the meeting as I'm not sure what specialist skills I can bring to the table..... I've lost two friends on Londons streets in the last 3 years. One to an HGV in 2007. There is a mass of talent and skills coming to the meeting by the look of the list and I'm sure you'll use it well.
I agree with Fixated - Strong simple message leaflets and flyers that we can distribute are a must for the short term. As are stickers that can be used on HGVs, on lamp-posts near bad junctions and anywhere cyclists will see them.
We will make it safer.

Hello,
I'm new to this so don't know how to add my name to the list. I'd be glad to help in any way I can.
Would it be possible for the person who updated the google map of deaths to add my friend Antony Smith? He died on 21st April 2008 at the corner of Middleton Road and Kingsland Road E8. It was a heavy tipper truck turning left.

I haven't had a chance to read all the posts on this so might be repeating something already said and I'm not sure if i'm going to be able to make tuesday but I've spoken to a mate who works for 5live who said this...
i can certainly fwd the event details to my morning reports colleagues here at 5live when you get a date sorted. they'd need as literate and audible person to talk for 3 mins. can i recommend a mr d moruzzi?!
bbc london would be *really *keen on in it i reckon. lbc and any other london stations too. it's a good one for them as cyclists is always a hot topic in london. i can get you some contacts for bbc london if i have chance to poke around a bit
if an event is organised & people who do attend on tuesday think it would be useful to follow it up let em know and i definitely will

I just got a PM re a ghost bike. Not sure if this has been posted: London Tonight 5th Sept 2009 on Vimeo
Thanks for posting this.
In addition to Bill's (no doubt) excellent 'shopping' list of people to get onto, what is the mileage in getting the Road Hauliers' Association, whatever is the LGV licensing body and traffic police to start addressing this issue with the weight it deserves? There's no one on that list from lorry drivers' perspective or the enforcement end of things. This can't turn into LGVs VERSUS cyclists, this should be LGVs AND cyclists trying to develop a new more respectful relationship. As far as I can tell, the RHA, traffic police and whichever body licenses drivers of LGVs aren't making this a priority.

Lord Adonis would presumably be a good target being in charge of the UK's transport strategy.
Though I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Oh and i hope that people realise this will be a long battle, but it is one that we can make a difference. It takes quite a long time and a considerable amount of effort to get things changed but hopefully in the end it will be worth it.
In terms of banning lorries from London even during peak hours, i think that will be a big ask especially with all the construction going on for the London olympics and that we need things like our bins collected and our supermarkets well stocked. However, as Bluequinn said earlier, it can be worth asking for big in the aim of getting a compromise.
All those who have said we need a simple and clear message get a big +1 from me.
Good luck for the meeting on Tuesday, hope that we can all make our roads that bit safer for everyone.

Have been thinking about this overnight and one suggestion that comes to mind is that any campaign/action that is undertaken comes from base of good information. At one point, concerned about accidents and fatalities on the road, particularly involving cyclists, Toronto comissioned a coroners report on road traffic accidents with a focus on cyclists. The report that was produced was well received by all parties for being clear, impartial and based on factual and credicle evidence.
If I may put on my cold-hearted and impassionate hat for a moment: There is one area where we can benefit from fatalities is that they are well documented. Although reports may be littered with opinion they will always contain a lot of simple facts. I think that it could well be beneficial to request a coroner to be commissioned to conduct an enquiry into all cyclist and H/LGV fatal accidents in London over the past 7-10 years to provide an impartial, factual evidence based report on the factors that affected and were related to those accidents. If nothing else it would mean that you have credible and reliable information available when approaching skeptical/cynical stakeholders although it could well provide much more as the Toronto study did.
-
• #164
All sudden deaths will be followed up with a coroners inquest. They just sometimes take a long while to start/complete. The info will be out there, as long as a paper covered it.
-
• #165
Each individual case is covered but rarely, if ever considers similar cases. What the Toronto enquiry provided was an overview of all fatal incidents, common affecting factors, etc over a long period. Instead of campaigning based on anecdotal and single event evidence, people were then able to work from meaningful analysis and statistics* for future action. It may seem harsh to say this but there is little value in taking action based on a unique element or factor with a low perceived reoccurence. You're never trying to prevent the death that just happened, only those that might happen in the future.
*I realise that statistics around the loss of life is often uncomfortable territory. We inevitably have an emotional attachment to the face on the accident. However, statistics are good for guiding us on what to campaign for, emotion guides us well in why we're campaigning for it.

I don't have the details to hand, but this has been done. The recommendation was that an interim ban on heavy good vehicles during peak hours should be considered as a priority whilst other measures were discussed.
I can't for the life of me think where I read it or which organisation published it, but it was government led, possibly medical health driven. -
• #167
Excellent. The LCC/CTC should know about it and a request for information to the DfT should be able to turn it up. Worth looking at to see if the scope is still relevant and the findings still reliable.

While I don't think I could bring much to the table for this particular meeting I do work for the National Policing Improvement Agency.
Amongst other things we produce policing manuals, for example our Specialist Operational Centre produced (together with ACPO) the current Road Deaths Investigation Manual. If any systemic issues were identified with regard to police investigation of fatal collisions involving cyclists then I could at the very least put you in touch with the policy makers.

Im right now on the phone to get the Cordy House (Curtain Road, Shoreditch). Just spoke to the owner, will get the answer this evening. For those of you who know the space, it works perfectly, bikes inside and everything.
Is Cordy House still a possibility? sounds perfect. Tue 6pm start?
Could you let me know so we can confirm it with the LCC people? Thanks. -

Yep I'd like to come. I work for a highways engineering company that runs the London Cycle Network+, so I've got access to stats, maps, funding, etc. If that would help?
Yes, please come. Nice to know where cycling funding is being used.

I work for VOSA who are an executive agency of the DfT responsible for the enforcement of vehicle road safety both in the mechanical sense and also drivers. One of our activities is carrying out accident investigations where a HGV is involved looking at the roadworthiness of the vehicle prior to the incident. Unfortunately I'm not available for next weeks meeting but if you need any information to do with HGV road safety standards and also driver responsibility please pm me and I'll get you everything I can.
Drivers blind spots have been a hot topic of late within the DfT up to the point where we were handing out fresnel lenses to foreign left hand drive HGV's at major ports in order to reduce the incidents of sideswiping by these vehicles on the roads. For UK HGV's, the legislation regarding wide angle and close proximity mirrors changed this year so that the drivers view of the immediate area around the cab had to be increased by the fitment of extra mirrors in some cases. If the cause of most of these incidents, partially or wholly, lies with the vehicle construction then the DfT are the people to lobby.
Sorry this was a long one, I just wanted to get some info across as I'm nowhere near a puter or the interweb next week.
Such a shame you can't be there. Could we meet with you some other time afterwards?

I occasionally write for the Guardian's bike blog. If I can help out in any way in that capacity, please let me know. I also have a bike blog of my own, with a much smaller audience, but am always glad to post stuff on there if it helps.
On another note, in a week and a bit I have a space on the fourth plinth. I would be happy to make a scene if somebody could help me get a placard made up. I was thinking some facts/figures about road deaths and a link to an appropriate site? Also thought about taking up a ghost bike if I can get my hands on one.
I'm writing up the experience of being on there for a local paper, so it could be a good excuse to get coverage in there, too.
Hi Sparky,
Jimmi offered to help with any sign making. Maybe you two could work together? Hope you can come Tue.

what are we trying to get out of this? i assume more resources dedicated to this problem and not just lip service form dft / tfl / boroughs / freight industry. i see from lushes post the solution 'fresnal lenses' will help....i'm spetical and sounds like bit of a media stunt to me. at a couple of quid each it is not really a intregrated apporach to solving the problem. also research in denmark (serious about this problem) showed that a good % of accidents were asscioated with driver being unaware over being unable to see. potentially, it could be argued that these are good 'media spin' items which are cheap. and more serious solution would be http://www.see-mi.dk/ or similar. are not we arguing that the solutions proposed by DfT / TfL...etc are not good enough as the problem is growing?? therefore they need to dedicate more resources - and the message it 'what you're doing is not good enough so try harder...cyclists are still being killed'
Is anyone from the Standard coming? You should consider sending out an invite and see if one of their journalists wants to become involved?
Secondly, re-Skyride, simple white T-shirts with a simple and clear slogan "End Lorry deaths now" or n-cyclists killed by HGV's since 200n - Enough is Enough" something stark and simple. The T-shirts idea will be more visible than armbands and can be home made by anyone very quickly. They would allow cyclists wearing them to find each other and ride as a group. You could then go find Boris and friends and get into all of his photos.
