  • Hmm - maybe try and wrangle a different lock as a replacement, doesn't sound like you want this hassle again...

I will. With the last lock I thought it might just be a one-off, but now I know it's a design flaw. They did offer me a similar model, with a slightly more enclosed mechanism - this time I'll accept.

Right - I'm going to go and work my charms on the nice people at the fire station, to see if I can persuade them to come and help me...

  • And yes, I've been jiggling it, shaking it, hitting it, bashing it against things, cuddling it, poking it, wrenching it, coaxing it, swearing at it...

Hmmmmmm, sounds pleasantly like a relation ship that could last...

  • Hmmmmmm, sounds pleasantly like a relation ship that could last...

Actually, this is pretty symbolic of my whole love/hate relationship with this bloody bike!

  • The fire brigade are always very helpful and would surely come to your rescue if your not too far from a station
And will probably try to charge her for it.

  • I very much doubt that a lock you recently used is now 'siezed' it could've been a bit stiff which wouldve totally been solved by the GT85. I think its likely to be some sort of mechanical jam.

Id recommend a lot of jiggling about/shaking it/hitting it.

Also bear in mind that someone may have glued your lock which is surprisingly common.

I dunno if you remember or even if I told you but this happened to me. Then I snapped the key off in the lock trying to force the key. Cue me not being able to work and having to wait 4 hours for someone to come with an angle grinder

  • How about letting it know that you love it? It will do wonders for its self esteem.

What about my bloody self esteem? Oh my god - I'm in an abusive relationship with my bike. It explains so much!

Right, I'm off to borrow Nhatt's bike and do some work. I'll be calling on the avenging angle grinders (and bolt cutters) later this evening.

Thanks so much people - you've given me a timely reminder of what a good thing this forum can occasionally be.

  • This has happened to me, both with my krypto d lock and my abus chain. They both worked again when I added lots of chain oil and bike lube. The d lock seems to have been permanently fixed but the abus needs topping up with oil now and then.

occasionally being the operative word :P

  • Similar thing happened with my D lock and I WD40'd it, left it for a while and gave the lock barrel a few smacks with a metal hammer which unlodged whatever was stuck inside and reset the barrel, it and it now works fine. Give it a go before you go at it with a cutter

  • Emilia I'm in N5 near Clissold too so if you need moral support...(no bolt cutters though)

  • Graphite is better than GT85 etc. The pencil is mightier...

  • did you know the particle structure of graphite is very interesting :)

  • looks like this:
    00000000000000000000000000000000000
    00000000000000000000000000000000000000
    000000000000000000000000000000000000000
well except less gaps :D and its slightly more un organised.
so children, tell me why it has lubricating properties

  • BMMF- have you tried sharpening a pencil into a bicycle lock?

  • That would be stupid.

I just scribble poetry imploring it to release into the lock opening. Works a treat. I do have a way with words though.

  • jesus... just looked on google for the difference between a grinder and angle grinder (wasnt aware there was one) and hit images... found a man who took one in the face... not a pretty sight but thought id share none the less... sorry...

  • +1 to graphite. i've used if before on my kryptonite and loads of other locks, great stuff. didn't use a pencil though i had a bottle of graphite dust. not sure if you could use a pencil, what one would you use? hb, 2b etc?

  • I remember when I found out poetry didnt have to rhyme. Grade 6 English class = piece of piss

I was told that pencils don't have proper graphite in anymore, so it's not as good as proper graphite dry lubrication powder. I was guessing there'd be some sort of stabiliser or binder in there as well maybe - just wiki'd it up and it says they have a mixture of graphite and clay in these days.

Plus you can't squirt a pencil down a lock.

  • how is this for a try?

  • I really really badly want to see this^ photo somehow humourously mashpotatochopped with the ossified shuddering mummy thing. Get to bloody work John. I will use it whenever I spot you striking on the forum in fine style.
