You've got like 18 inches of that scratchy tramac stuff before the cycle lane starts, for the motorist to spot that the cycle lane exists and to stop as the cyclist heads past the front of the car. And it leaves the motorist stopping dead with most of their car hanging out in the road, waiting for someone to rear-end them and shunt the stopped car over the cyclist anyway.
I spoke to some drivers, they all agreed that if you just dumped these on British roads, without making the public aware of their existence, people just won't "see" them as they turn a corner into a side-road. None of them had heard of this type of lane, nor had they remembered seeing one (despite having driven across them without spotting them). And other motorists who aren't turning won't be expecting the turning car to just come to a dead halt like that.
These just look like accidents waiting to happen as far as I can see.
and you're right, there are some of these in Cable street and they tend to alternate priority just to make things that little more dangerous, I've been driven into along here.. I started taking the A13 (Commercial Road) as I felt safer and it was easier to predict what cars and peds would do.
