  • Luckily it is far too small for me.

  • Think I might have bit if it was about an inch taller. I think its lovely.

    ditto

  • gah!

some horrible gerald scarfe-like monster reflected in the seat stays

  • The seat clamp has been over tightened by the looks of it and there's the beginings of a little crack here but nothing that can't be managed.

I think it's worth over £200 so fetishists should dig deep.

Does anyone else think that £200+ is a little expensive for a frame with an over-tightened seat-clamp and a cracked tube...?

  • That is fucking beautiful. If I was a taller man I'd fucking whip that up.

  • A taller man?! It's a 55cm!

  • sorry for the noobness, but what's up wit the angles in particular?

  • Yes, but it's still probably a fair valuation at the moment :(

Absolutely nothing is *wrong *with the angles.

  • ah ok, just preference - but what is it about the geom that isn't good for you?

  • I prefer steeper angles that's all. It's a personal thing the frame is still lovely.

  • Saw one go on ebay for somewhere over 275 a couple of weeks back, but it only had a slight ding in the top tube.

  • Is the frame still available?
Might be interested if it is..

Maybe. For some reason I'd thought it was that the chrome plating was cracked, not the actual tube.

Still no idea why this isn't a 1939 frame or whatever.

  • Sorry I'm late. Yes it's still available. Re dating, I would expect to see a grease nipple in the BB if it was 1939 and the rear spacing would most likely be 110 and not 120. Also I can't imagine it having Campag ends in 1939. It would just look very different.

  • Sold

  • Now that it's been sold, can you tell me how you cleaned it up?
What did you use? Metal polish?
I need some chrome cleaning tips.

  • Nice pic and a nice old Stronglight chain set I see.
I've used allsort in the past - Brasso wool, rags and nail polish remover. I used to clean my old Chrome BMX with wire wool but it scratched the chrome and the rust would come back worse. My friend works with metal and gave me some 0000 grade wire wool. It's the finest stuff you can get and it doesn't scratch. It works a treat. I have some cranks that I need to polish a scratch out of. He suggested working down from 0, 00 to 0000 to finish. I've just bought a dremmel but not used it yet.

  • This is a picture of me in 1980 using my fixed wheel Carlton in a time trial. I still have it. I actually did my PB's for both 10 and 25 miles on a fixed wheel the following year. Sadly that bike was stolen. I managed 24-21 on this machine using 48 x 15 (86 inch) and I believe I recorded 1-6-35 in a 25miler 48 x 16 (81 inch)with my PB of 1-1-12 also on fixed. When it came to time trials I always performed best without gears. Selection of the right cog was important. I remember Tony Doyle doing a 56 min 25miler on 72 inch gear proving you don't need big gears to go fast. No one has ever beaten such a time on 72 fixed. Twiddling is the name of the game! He must have revved his balls off.

The plan now (aged 46) is to see if I can beat my two PB's 30 years on. I pick up the carton from the sprayer tomorrow...

  • apparently i must submit 3 replies to post pics..

  • so that makes 3

  • ....and have to wait 24 hours... bye for now. Keep it fixed...

  • i have a 1954 chrome Carlton Continental build up as a singlespeed. great old frame.

  • I have what in times was a chromed Carlton Flyer...

    ..now green..

Waiting to see your Carlton fixed wheel paul.

  • it was circa 1971 and precisely fuck all wrong with the angles and to be very very precise those who say otherwise do talk shite.

I won the Paddington Track Open Bass Charrington 20km on that exact model in 1971, as well as many other events too and serously challenged Brendan McEwen many times at Welwyn . T

The frame was perfect for Calshot as was ie the Skol 6 track bought and taken down to Calshot, a new track replaces it.

They weren't Campag ends, only copies, but did the job. The chrome on mine was crap, was rechromed and was worse again. Mine was sold to Dick Hooper - works in Phil Corley Cyles in MK

Steeper angles would be 74 parallel which really only were for 6 day tracks or twiddling in time trials with low gears as you lose "grunt" with being too far forward and unable to push big gears.

I'll toddle off and gaze at my 25 mile Junior Champion Hillingdon CC jersey and Senior trophy now...oh and club Track Champion too- all a very, very long time ago, but you never forget......and good bike frame geometry doesn't either
