When I said 'take the lane', I don't mean the bicycle lane, I meant the lane of the road, taking at least near the middle of the lane.
It might piss them off, but it force them to see me and overtake me properly, rather than speeding past me at 30mph leaving less than a metre worth of space between me and the car.
if a car was overtaking me with little space to spare despite being near the middle of the lane, I have enough room to manovere away from the car.
it also mean they can't miss me, I'm right in front of them, I am part of the traffic, not a cyclist that happen to be on the road.
I agree with you, but it's not always that easy. I'm not to comfortable taking the lane when the traffic is going 60-70mph, I'd much rather be closer to the side of the road whilst giving myself enough room. In these circumstances, cycle lanes can be quite nice to have. When it gets a bit slower then yes, taking the lane is a good way to ensure people see you and pass with plenty of room, as well as giving you plenty of space to manoeuvre in.
