  • i smashed a car bike light in dense traffic :(

    What's a car bike light?

  • not trying to call you out, but for the sake of conversation, i don't believe you're riding 50 mi a day, ONLY because thats like 4 hours start to finish... including shower and everything, i mean.... and who has the time for that?
You make time. You make time to do things you love... or perhaps because you've got no other option.

I know someone at my previous work that cycled from watford to motspur park... and back. Every working day (well he was an off shore engineer so every so often he'd be stuck on a boat in the north sea... but the rest of the time). google maps the distance I don't know what it is, but it's massive.

My dad also used to commute to work and it was over 20 each way... in seatle... they've got hills there...

Neither could change where they work or where they lived and it was their chosen method of transport.

I do a measley 30 miles a day (although, unlike the two above, fixed, sometimes on polo bike, also I think in worse traffic) as I've said before it's what you are used to, when I was a kid I thought 4 miles was a massive bike ride, ten years ago i'd say commuting 10 miles each way was insanity, when I last changed job I thought I'd only cycle in every other day. Now I wonder if there is actually a limit on how far one could cycle on a commute once you get used to it?

edit: also your maths is wrong, on a lovely geared bike in rolling kent country side I'd say he'd be taking about 2.5 hours to do 50 miles, if it's a commute he's doing two legs of 1 and a quarter hours... not too much at all... I know people who's train/tube commute is way longer than that.

  • Yeah. I hate cycling too. So dull. Your legs just go round and round and your arms do precious little.
I have swapped my bike for a set of dominoes. Five and threes - much more thrilling.

  • Sometimes I hate cycling... like proper... especially the run to work... lots of drivers just in your way slowing you down, being cunts.

Last Saturday and the Sunday a fortnight before I remembered why I cycle, and fuck me I felt great that day even with the aches and pains I had afterwards from me actually exercising.

I dunno about you guys I managed to summon my some sort of super strength where I become an almost invincible super rider at least in my own mind, I can seem to ride as fast as I wish to ride effortlessly ... "Oh I want to get out the seat and sprint up this hill ... no problem" ... "I wanna catch up with that car, no problem".

If I am in this zone for long enough, my adrenaline goes into the statosphere and I will pedal at maximum power until I am physically drained and it is soo hard to stop myself doing it because if it happens half way through a ride I a completely spent and have a hard time completing the ride but for the 10-40 minutes I can keep it up I feel all powerful and I cycle for it.

  • Sometimes you need to realise how far you've come to understand how much you love cycling.

When I started riding geared regularly I went out with friends who consistently left me for dead - the sort who, when I was grinding the little ring, they were happily spinning on the 53.

Over the past few months I've been on lots of solo rides - hacking away on windy, exposed roads - feeling like I'm not getting anywhere - hence my first post. Last week I went out with the same friends and led the whole way, spinning at a consistent 90rpm. I even had to stop and wait a few times.

Fair enough, they may have been having a bad day (but didn't say so), but they openly said I was stronger. Ok, so I'm still carrying weight, and will never be a strong climber, but all those hours gritting my teeth and riding against the wind seem to have paid off...

  • My commute is pissing me off at the moment, cars going about 14-20mph getting in my way, I've been trialling an alternative route with longer straights and less junctions. But still getting my strength back after the flu so that may have a lot to do with it.
