Assaults on cyclists are thankfully rare. There have been quite a few in the N1 area in recent years, though, and many of them have involved stolen motorised cycles. Some people had realised that you can just lift Ortlieb panniers off the back of a bicycle from an overtaking moped. On a few occasions, when they did this, they caused the rider to crash. That spate of robberies has now stopped, but there is still the occasional report like lederhosen's.
On the subject of Matthew Parris' disgraceful article, this attracted a record number of complaints, which was good to see. It was stupid, callous and even probably factually nonsense. That he was calling for murder or GBH just because he had probably got the origin of the litter in his local hedges wrong (he thought that cyclists had dropped it, but it sounded much more like stuff that people chuck from cars) is astonishing.
