You do need a big one.
For example the park pocket one can't nadle anything bigger then a 3/32 or small 1/8. Things like half links or K710s don't fit. Or rather you can push the pin out, you just can't push it back in.
And for heavy chains its best to use a good tool. Something like a Park professional chain breaker.
