Yep - the Fighting Cocks is a pretty cool pub. Its on the edge of Verulam Park - looks like you'll ride through a bit of the park - full of bits of Roman wall & stuff, and a duck pond.
You'll probably want to get the train back from the main St Albans station (to St P), not the St Albans Abbey line which is nearer the Fighting Cocks. If you head up through the park towards the Cathedral from the pub you can then ride up through the centre of town and down Victoria Rd to the main station.
Interesting fact - when they excavated Roman Verulamium, they found very few remains of the previous dwellings, etc. Turns out that the cathedral got built using much of the ancient rubble.

Another recommended pub - the Horn - http://horn.spodnet.net/ - right by the station.
Have fun, sorry I can't join you!!
