Face this BB ?

Should this NOS frame be faced before I install a Phil BB ?

fair enough, being NOS i assumed would be dandy, stand corrected.

as a matter of fact........unless you are using outboard PHIL bottom bracket you dont have to face anything as the cups on the square taper one dont have a shoulder to sit on the shell in the first place.....you should however chase your threads

^ what broken said - the Phil uses cups without flanges so I would specifically NOT face this, the bare ends will be exposed and simply rust. You DO need the chase the threads, they are covered in paint and the cups will probably just get fncked if you try and run them in as is.

It is a square taper Phil BB so it seems the best thing to do is just chase the threads and not face.

Many square taper Shimano BB's (UN-types and CS-types) do have just a flange at one side.
The plastic "cups" of these BB-sets don't have a flange either. Of better: they have a flange, but it shouldn't touch the BB shell. It's just a reinforcement. Just the steel and alu "cups" or adapers have flanges that touch the BB shell sides.
Exception: BB-UN10. Plastic adapters on both sides. Both have flanges and touch BB shell.
