P.S. Single speed is bollocks, you may as well just keep your geared bike. go fixed or stay geared.
this is indeed a lie.

Talbot Road at Stretford.
Must be the season for road repairs.....apart from when half the country is dug up every February so that the local authority can spend it's road budget before the 31st March! -

i was doing 30 miles a day on a 50x16 SS until last friday when a van hit me and spoilt my fun. once i get a bike that isn't structurally wonky i'll resume the habit.
getting the train in is killing me. -

At least you're not sitting there watching hundreds of cyclists overtake your bus. That was my biggest problem when I was bikeless for a few weeks.

The sight of all the cyclists heading over waterloo bridge in the morning and evening as i walk between station and work makes me all wistful (and my legs twitchy).

I do 26 a day on either 48/16 or 50/17 as has been mentioned the end of the week I wish I could freewheel a bit... that's when I'll get my geared bike out. Beckenham Hill for me it's not too steep but goes on a bit kinda like a steeper brixton hill without traffic light stops

Do 24 mile round trip down here in wet, windy, and hilly Cornwall on 46/18, but on Friday go the long way round, on my 39/52-12/23 70's Holdsworth. Have a rest at the week-end and drink some beer!

An interesting topic about commuting;

22 mile round trip here from Walthamstow to Vauxhall. I used to ride geared and found, like yourself, i was only using two, maybe three gears, so ditched the hybrid for a Flyer and never looked back.
Take the plunge.

14 a day Camden to Brixton on 46/16 SS. Waterloo to Holborn on a Friday has me wincing and praying for a red light to rest up on.
Apart from that I love my ride.

Mine is 3.5 miles and I can do it in 10 minutes, I was getting excited because my new one is slightly longer but it's only 3.8 miles. I get envious when I see these kind of threads!
I'm the same. Far too short in summer. Mind you, in winter (hailstones and winds, etc). 3.5 miles is plenty far enough.

I start my 30 mile a day commute tomorrow. Looking forward to it, getting out on the bike every morning means I arrive at work awake, and the shower in the office means I arrive at my desk clean! I'll be doing about 15 miles from Newbury to Reading, all flat, on 48:17. But may flip over to 48:15 depending on just how flat it turns out to be and how exposed to the wind it is. Just a shame there is no secure bike parking at work :(

Yep - circa 30 Miles fixed (Teddington -> Mayfair) per day on 48/17
Flat as fuck apart from a little hill in Richmond Park. I do try to HTFU and do it all year round, just to be able to tell my work colleagues that they are all poofs. Must admit, trying to look as though you really enjoyed it when you're soaking wet and your hands have turned blue can be tricky.

Conversely I find commuting on my SS Mountain bike (which has slicks) knackering @55GI ... commuting on my Shorter which is SS isn't and that is at 71GI.

Ten miles to work and ten miles back, a lovely way to start and finish the day.

18 miles/day single speed 48/17 for commuting on my Skyline from Wanstead to Farringdon during the week. Not the most fashionable setup, but then transporting my 16kg 18-month-old on it as well doesn't add many cred points either...

That's cos you're spinning your tits off on the mountain bike!

Commute is 9 miles flattish each way on my SS, sometimes wish it were longer, especially on lovely cool autumn-ish days like today. Couldn't tell you the set up, all I knows is there's a chainwheel and a rear sprocket (good start!), goes faster than your average granny, slower than most competitive lycra-clad morning commuters. Speed's not the point, it's often the most enjoyable bit of the day. No need for gears. Have fun!

I commute from various locations around London to my workplace at Brick Lane DOZENS of times a day ... on different bikes too!
