  • Thats interesting about the pots. Have you seen these things?

    http://www.scienceinafrica.co.za/2004/september/refrigeration.htm

They are called a Zeer pot and use evaporative cooling to keep food fresh. Apparently invented in Nigeria. Clever things.

  • That's awesome, really clever idea.

  • Do you research all potential competitors to the Eski Balki?

  • haha... no, I remember seeing a doco on it. I just had a look on line and apaprently it was invented as late as 1995 which I found amazing. A new invention that is simple and has had a big impact on the local communities. Keeps tinnies cold too.

  • Anyway, brakes... bloody good, eh?

  • I would think that you could create something similar using heat reflective materials for the camping market- earthenware pots would be pretty heavy.

Or expanded polystyrene, similar to the Eski but with the evapourative cooling part replacing the cool blocks.

  • seriously tho...like edscoble above, i rode mtb's previous and have always ridden with mtb spd's...still do. never rode with straps, etc and being increasingly a lazy cunt have been walking around in my cleats lately. having read this thread now fearing uncleating moments when they are least needed. i did UTFS for a cleats vs straps debate but got nicht...whats the consensus? for the purpose of thread relevance can you do best skiddage with cleatage or strappage?

i personally have never really used straps, used them a couple of time and couldnt get in them very easily and once in i worried about not being able to get out again.

Used road SPD-SL for the first year of riding fixed, but you get through cleats at a rediculously quickly, changed to SPD but found you can clip out too easily. Recently got some time atacs as the vast majority of people i know iuse them and rate them, they're wicked, give me real confidence that i can rely on them , only issue is that mounted them on the huge float option and after a couple of days off the bike went for a ride and forget, and fell over as i couldnt get my foot out as i forgot i had so much float!

  • Cunts on shit bikes undertaking are a massive pain in the testicles.
I had a big ol ride the other weak, and nearly got killed twice by two people trying to undertake on the inside. One got such a mouthful of extremities that he just stared at me in disbelief.

    +1

I keep getting undertaken by people on mountain bikes wearing gas masks with fluro vests. Its so fucking dangerous, I shouldn't have to check my left. One did it to me in heavy traffic and was so close I nearly lost my balance trying to avoid him. I abused him a bit, then he started trying to run me off the road by pulling up beside me and riding towards me. I just stood my ground until he gave up.

  • just a thought, if some cunt stole your brakeless fixed and rode off at speed.... would he get far?! i doubt it... unless the "cunt of a thief" was one of you here :)

maybe we should leave brakeless bikes around and watch the thieves get run over/crash/smashed etc! happy days

  • Riding into work with my girlfriend I normally ride at her five O'clock.

This causes idiots to cycle up behind her then find that they are trapped because I am to her right and slightly behind, boxing them in, in effect.

If they had looked they would have seen our respective road positions, before they got boxed in.

Some of them then try to muscle me to the right to squeeze between us.

So far this has not worked out well for the people who have tried it.

i do that too. seems to be more protective from traffic for her.

  • Very chivalrous indeed.

  • when are you riding with Dammit's girlfriend

  • Sneaky Nelson getting in with Mrs Dammit

  • i get around...she likes to be held for a while after the riding too. But then don't we all.

A lot of the little shits that nicked peoples bikes and generally caused trouble round where my parents live ride around on brakeless bmxes.
After seeing people that actually ride bmxes as they were intended to be ridden do it, they probably thought it was cool to do so, and did the same, although lacking a lot of the same riding skill, no doubt......i'm sure if they can ride a brakeless singlespeed bike without crashing, they're not going to struggle much with a brakeless fixed gear.

    P.S.

My new bike is going to be brakeless, gearless, singlespeed with a freecoaster.....put that in your pipe and smoke it all yo haterz innit.

  • yeah but you like to emergency bunnyhop traffic islands...apparently. fuck trying that fixed

  • it's not hard fixed, it's just the peds stood on the middle that make it tricky

cheers sainsburys ed...maybe i will 'try something new' today

but you did and consequently end up being safer, a better way to ride.

Netherless I often make the gap smaller and smaller if I suspect someone coming up on my left from behind, until they have no choice but to either jump onto the kerbs or brake hard.
Once they appear again and about to scream at me for the 'dangerous', I tap my bag which clearly said "DEAF" which 90% of the time did shut up them up.

Then I gave them a quick kiss on the cheek and bugger off.

I've done it fixed loads of times :)
Its not difficult if you know how to bunnyhop a fixed, its no trickier than bunnyhopping a curb, occasionally you just have to hop a little higher, I recommend learning a technique called crank setting or pedal setting, which can be useful if your crank timing is a little off for the hop.
Basically when approaching the object if you haven't quite got your crank timing right for the hop, you kick the back of the bike up, rotate the cranks slightly to the correct position, drop it down and then go for the hop.

  • it's not hard fixed, it's just the peds stood on the middle that make it tricky

I find that just adds to the fun if anything ;)

  • Personally I think bunnyhopping is an essential road riding skill regardless of what bike you are on, it can help you avoid shitty potholes, mount curbs at speed if need be, and is generally very very useful!

  • I never bunny hop on a fixed wheel bicycle before thought, so I don't really think it's an essential skill.

useful undoubtedly so, but not entirely necessary.
