^seriously? Ive found gatorskins to be all round the worst choice of rear tire for Brakless riding, just about ok in the dry, but a whole lotta nothing in the rain, as festy said you just slide. I must say, I have been totally loving rolling brakeless through the slightly less wet months, but think im going to whack a brake on for the winter....sometimes i just cant be arsed....
+1.
Only have one, and only then because its just about the only puncture proof 650.

My car failed it's MOT last week because it haz brakless....so I had to shell out on new discs and pads all round. My protestations to the Inspector that I can slow down just using the gears fell on deaf ears.......

but in your previous post you said you can't skid.
seriously dude, what are you going to do if you hit a steep hill where you can't slow your pedal stroke or if you have to break sooner than anticipated? put some brakes on before you end up seriously injured or worse.Correct i can't skid... yet.
If i hit a steep hill i always ride slower, i assumed it was common sense.
And for the record i have a brake, i was only brakeless for a day while i waited to get a new break fitted.
I have ridden fixed for about a year now with a break, and in fact i have used my break only a couple of times (mainly when i was admitedly riding like a dick!)
otherwise i feel riding fixed has improved me as a cyclist and improved my awareness on the road, its for that reason i am constantly trying to convince people to ride fixed.
If you can control your bike brakeless then go for it.....
after all the only times i have had to suddenly stop were when i was going too fast in close traffic, i simply ride slower when i have slow moving traffic ahead of me and then cane it when i have open road ahead. -

RC, you've probably heard this lots of times before but you should try to practise skidding on grass (the stuff that cows eat, not the stuff you smoke). It's even easier on wet grass. Put your weight over the front wheel and commit to locking your legs.
Enjoy. -

is it really? it's my fault, I'm running on those 4 seasons tyres on the back, and gators on front.

worst choice of tyre for any riding, they are overpriced shit.

They're a bit too thin so they wear out quickly for brakeless fixie skidder bikes. They are awesome tyres though, i've never ever had a problem with grip, and i've taken them to a pretty big hill with a corner at the bottom and hit about 35 on my gearie, leaning over as if i was getting my knee down, and they were fine... And they're awesome against punctures.

what are the benefits of riding brakeless-freewheel ?
if you have life insurance your family get a nice pay out whilst they are young enough to really enjoy it
-
• #241
If you ride with a break just make sure you don't brake your break otherwise you won't be able to break.

ability to skid != ability to ride brakless

I've been thinking about this recently.
Nipping around London I found that I was using the brake less and less- except in emergency situations.
I'd say now that on a standard journey I probably only use the brake to pop the rear wheel in the air at traffic lights and spin it round to get the pedal in the right place to start off when the lights change.
It's a pleasant challenge seeing how little I can use the brake- and the answer is 99% of the time.
However the 1% of the time when someone steps out in front of me from between parked cars, or a car cuts in front from the right hand lane as it suddenly decides to turn left that make me glad that I have it on the bike.
Could I skid in these situations? Of course- but using the brake gives more control, and I can always lock the rear wheel up to help if I am not stopping fast enough.
In essence- could I ride brakeless? Yes, do I want to? No. -

I've heard that if you use a chicken as a innertube, you have no need for breaks.
If you are of a vegetarian persuasion, of course you may use tofurkey...
who gives a fuck.

tofurky sounds like a pile of shit.

Tofu can actually cause internal bleeding in some people (or it might be Quorn, can never remember).
Anyway- one of the hidden dangers of being a veggie.

self-righteous anaemics.
-
• #248
Reminds me of another story- one of the African aid charities replaced a tribes cooking pots, which were old cast iron units.
Tribes members started to get anaemic- no one could work out why as their diet was identical.
Turns out they had been getting a meaningful amount of iron from the old cooking pots, which they were not getting from the new stainless steel ones.
Law of unintended consequences for you.

seriously tho...like edscoble above, i rode mtb's previous and have always ridden with mtb spd's...still do. never rode with straps, etc and being increasingly a lazy cunt have been walking around in my cleats lately. having read this thread now fearing uncleating moments when they are least needed. i did UTFS for a cleats vs straps debate but got nicht...whats the consensus? for the purpose of thread relevance can you do best skiddage with cleatage or strappage?
