Not a voice of authority on it, but I'd heard a lot of the issue was around the fact that new laws on distance lorries can travel meant that the deliveries to the sorting office were arriving 1 hour later. For a while they still brought the posties in at the same time, but obviously they had nought to do (truck's not arrived, = no post to sort). The management wanted to change this BUT the hour later start would mean that the posties lose their unsociable hours bonus...
From my understanding the strike isn't just about delivery drivers, but job losses, pay cuts, the Royal Mail reneging on terms and conditions of employment and securing workers pensions. All seems pretty reasonable to me. It seems like these attacks on the workers are designed to destabilise the CWU in order so that Mandelson can push through with his aim of privatising the Royal Mail, even though it could prove to be a politically suicidal move for Labour.
