I do about 20 miles a day fixed 42/16 with hills (I live in crystal palace). Sometime I wish I had some gears towards the end of the week...
My advice? Just fucking do it.

I do almost 30 a day on 48/19 and it's fine.
Mainly flat route, with one hill on the way home, which I slug it up. Sometimes, for training, I go other routes that have hills and it's no bother.
When deciding whether to go fixed, I just selected a suitable gear on my geared bike and did my commute on that gear only. I did that a few times and fact that it was easily doable. So I bought a Fuji Track and have never looked back.

hills are ?

if you can do it geared you can do it fixed unless there are some massive hills on the way

For long rides I find it is more important that you have bars with a variety of hand positions (ie drops or bullhorns) than whether it is fixed or geared.

good advice Mr eh chicken, cheers!

hills are ?
Ups aren't. Its easier to climb fixed then geared.
Descents can be a little hairy, or jut annoying. There is no reason why you can't ride fixed.

P.S. Single speed is bollocks, you may as well just keep your geared bike. go fixed or stay geared.

I ride 20 a day miles from Archway to Chiswick. I used to ride a geared Hybrid all the way decided to stick in one gear to see how it went. There are a couple of gradual hills that took me a while to get used to, in the first couple of weeks I felt knackered but I got fitter and now now I don't really notice them.
Now I ride a SS and am a stone lighter. -

Piece of piss. The only issue for me is time spent commuting cutting into other activities.

did 25+miles a day for the last year fixed. loved it. just a nice distance to work up a bit of sweat. commute now down to a measley 10 minutes each way now and i'm getting fat and grumpy. really miss the morning ride in particular. don't miss the saddle sores though...

I do 24 a day to and from Manchester on a fg 42/17. I think the advice about picking a gear and giving it a go is a damm good idea. I've just rebuilt an abandoned unloved Ridgeback MTB which I used last week. Bizarrely I found that I couldn't get used to gears again and left it in one gear, not to mention the free wheel. Frightened the life out of me when the pedals didn't go round on their own!
BTW, was feeling very sorry for myself on the ride in this morning: driving rain, six foot wide puddles and the masses back to work after the school hols when I had my "this is why I do this moment". Riding on the other side of the road past 100 meters of standing traffic, nipping in front of a white van as the temporary lights changed to green and sensing his frustration as he revved the arse of his his transit because I wouldn't let him pass! Cue nice warm, feeling-very-worthy moment.

Mine is 3.5 miles and I can do it in 10 minutes, I was getting excited because my new one is slightly longer but it's only 3.8 miles. I get envious when I see these kind of threads!

Palatine Road ?
Out of interest does anyone out there commute over 25 a day on either ss or fg???
I do 30 miles a day (reasonably flat) on a geared, but tend to use one or two of the gears and I'm looking to
throw on a few ss/fixed rides to/from work
anyone? If so what setup and how your feeling it
cheers
