ooh tricky, not sure. I got a Record headset today, well nice.
How are you Ummar? Are you going to Gemma's tomorrow night?

I'm good thanks Josh, just working and looking for a new job at the same time. Not recommended!
How was your holiday? -

sounds like dodgy advice, cup diameter is consistent enough it seems

As far as I know the Campag headsets are just ISO spec. And the Tange Seiki headset is a replica of the old record headsets, so should be fine.

some headsets have marginally bigger diameter than others like campag or chris king.....there are cases where you can just push the headset cups into the headtube by hand but campag, chris or some other headset will press fit fine. you will only find out when you are fitting the new one in......
also if the difference between inner diameter of the headtube and outer diameter of the cup is not too big and you dont want to buy new headset, you can use medium strenght bearing retaining compound to hold it in place

Thanks for the help, I think I'm going to give the Tange headset a go, and see what happens

I have a question along these lines and it seems daft to start a new thread.
New forks bought, tried fitting the bottom race - no joy. The OD of the fork is larger than the ID of the race. Went to LBS to see if they could fit the race with the correct tool - no joy, fork is too large for this particular headset race. So I got them to pull a 1" headset off the shelf to check that one - it was a Shimano 105. This also had an ID that was too small for the forks. So, does anyone know which headsets have a larger ID on the bottom race? Or do I have to get the bottom race seat reamed down to the right diameter? Apparently there is a tool that can do this but they didn't have one.

Odd. My Shimano 105s ID was too big for my forks, so I used a beer can shim.

There are multiple 1" headset sizes.. the inner dia. can vary..

Look like Shimano 105 headsets are available in two versions, to fit either 26.4 or 27mm (JIS) forks.
So look for JIS headset. -
• #12
Having trouble finding the JIS versions of the 105. Most places don't specify. Does anyone think it would be worth while having the race seat turned down to 26.4mm?
-
• #13
Any one?
-
• #15
Interesting, didn't think of purchasing it seperately...
Will they then match up to the rest of a 26.4 headset?
-
• #16
I know this thread is really boring but does anyone know if they'll match up with the old one I have?
-
• #17
yes, that crown race will fit the 1" 105 headset
-
• #18
get a file out, run around the edges of the crown race

Cycle surgery in West Hampstead machined the fork I bought for my road bike down to the smaller size to fit my Campag headset. It is done with a rather old fashioned looking tool that costs about £500 for some reason.
They did it for free and it took about 3.5 minutes. I gave them a contribution to their beer fund.

sorry to bump this: has anyone got a headset cup removal tool?
one of these:

^^^For that you need a screwdriver and a hammer!

you could use that combo. or you could use the right tool.
I picked up a frame a couple of days a go, and just took it to my lbs to get the headset cups removed. Whilst I was there I was chatting to the mechanic about getting a new headset.
The cups that were taken out were from a Campag headset, and I was told that I would have to get a Camapg one to replace it because the headtube will have been reamed to fit them.
I've already ordered a Tange headset to replace it so I'm not massively keen to shell out £40 for Record headset.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
