I had to go into London for work a while ago and was planning on getting the train to Waterloo then cycling, as this would be more convenient for going back to my office in Guildford later that day, and wouldn't involve me getting taxis. Unfortunately the SWT website said bikes weren't allowed on trains scheduled to arrive at waterloo between 7 and 10am.
I turn up on foot to my local station, people with bikes waiting for the train, train pulls in, people with bikes already on the train.
I was so mad I almost bought a Brompton.
