Yeah I'm not a huge tone pot fan to be honest, I always found I never used them and it's one more connection in the body to either fail or disrupt the current somewhat. I've always been able to do anything I want, for tone, by hand...
It's true I barely use mine, but on the other hand, there have been a couple of rare occasions when I have had need for it, so I'd have it just for those. There's no particular reason why they should go wrong, and if you switch them out for something decent and shield them, they shouldn't disrupt the current.
I've taken the PRS 5-way selector out of my Custom 22 and replaced it with a 3-way toggle and a push pull coil tap... much better! Had to drill out the hole to fit the toggle though which was a bit un-nerving on a €4,000 guitar!!!
