With regard to trim it's personality that counts most for me, Have to admit though I wish I'd never given that Jennifer Lopez my bloody mobile number. She just won't give up! She's a lovely girl and I've tried explaining to her that I just don't think about her in that 'special way' but am seriously thinking about changing my number or getting a helicopter with massive speakers strapped to the outside to hover over her apartment and just play the first line of Paranoid over and over again.

If music is to be considered High Art, then it must impress by being either ground-breaking, or show a rare perfection.
I actually doubt that art can be considered elevated enough in most artiste's (yes, with an E) lifetimes. There are some
of course, but I believe that death improves the chances of one's work being elevated to such lofty considerations.

Musically, I would say that Bob Marley's work has not only stood the test of a very short time, but has gained fans from all
over the world.....even those that speak no English at all. An outstanding feat.

Of the living musical artistes, I would say that the work of Prince, will also reckon very highly in the future.

For instance: Bach was devout Lutheran required to produce huge quantities of music for his various princes. Have we had any composers like that since 1800 ?

Not ones required to produce lots of music for a prince, of course, let alone any great ones, but we have had Beethoven and Brahms. Much of their work isn't too bad. :D

You are right he is high art, but we don't even experience his music any more in the way he intended it to be heard.

Ah well, that's a big debate, but I don't think that the musical greatness lies in performance aspects. As I understand it (secondhand, a friend of mine is doing a PhD in musicology--I'm not very musical myself), there are some issues with tuning. For instance, you could perform 'Yesterday' with a completely different sound and in a different context, but as long as production values were OK (e.g., sensitive and competent musicians), it would still come across as a great composition.

Of course, it would be intriguing to hear everything as it was performed then (and some people reckon that they've cracked that, who knows), but we can even still appreciate greatness in Latin poetry and Ancient Greek drama, and no-one even speaks Latin or Ancient Greek as a native speaker any more. There is an effort of research and explanation involved, but it can be done.

Ha! As if I had anything much to say about Damien Hirst and his timewasting ilk. Lucian Freud is miles better--of course there isn't really a comparison on the same scale. He is skilled and puts genuine effort into every painting. But to me calling something 'high art' has to stand a comparison with the greats. Much of the work of Raphael or Bach is high art, for instance. Too lofty? Maybe. But that we don't have a painter, musician, or other kind of artist of that sort around nowadays is not a reason to elevate the low contemporary standard beyond what it really is, which isn't very remarkable at all.
