Clearly another wild cycling inspired plan by Boris Johnson, maybe this is what he meant when he said he would build a series of 'bicycle superhighways' - clearly an idea he came up with whilst drunk.

I don't think that was stenciled when Boris is in power, it look like they've been there for years.
also I do see that bicycle symbol in the middle of the road every now and then, I think it just mean "share the road" as oppose to* "bicycle lane only"*.

Im pretty sure Lancing, Sussex has the worlds shortest and most confusing cycling lanes, one suggests that after less than 3m that you ride in to (or through) a steel communual bin.
One suggests I might want to leave the pavement and ride in to a set of railings. -

ahh i see. the cyclist painting on the road is an advisory sign only as they cannot take the cycle lane through the bus stop. you will see it on a lot of side streets - basically says 'cyclists here' same as most cycle lanes that are only advisory.
road engineering is really so dull. all about reg's and costs. dull dull dull.

Raynes Park is pretty bad, look at how the bike lane stop at the bus stop and start again a few metres down! very useless since it required you to get off the bike to cross certain part.
I fucking hate Raynes Park, drivers drive faster there than Central London and you get more drivers telling you to get off the road if you choose not to ride on the bike lane.
catch 22 isn't it? bike lane are usually dangerous, and the road automatically become dangerous due to drivers thinking that the cyclists should be taking the bike lane.

--- actually think the bike symbols on the road you get in London are a lot better than cycle lanes. Wish we had them in Bristol. They're just reminders that cyclists have a right to be there and drivers should be aware that people do cycle on that road. Cycle lanes are generally fairly poor, substandard excuses to keep cyclists out of the way of cars (which is why you often see them on uphill stretches of road) and are often even dangerous, creating a false sense of security and can lead you into bad road position.

For everyone's information, these advisory markings show cycle route continuity, in this case the route from Southwark Bridge to the Foundry (and beyond). They work much better than cycle lanes in signalling the presence of cyclists.
And @texas: Highway engineering can actually be really exciting when a real change is achieved. It is, of course, very dull when it's business as usual!
