  • Archway was named after the tunnel created to allow an easy passage for farmers in and out of Londons famous markets, it was believed a toll road could be created and would succeed as the farmers could save the cost of one horse per journey. that money could be spent on the toll.
    So the government allowed a consortium to blow a tunnel to by-pass Highgate and link to the great north road. it was led by a cornish Tin miner and three attempts failed, in the end they dug it out and built the bridge (designed by John Nash!)
    Thats part of Londons history and a connection with the North.. i say keep it!

    The whole Dick Whittington story is if, buts and maybes.. bow bells my arse!
