Bike stickers and decals

  • I've been wondering the exact same thing. I'm not sure whether to get a frame powdercoated - for the durable finish - or wet sprayed - so I can have decals. I was under the impression that powdercoating meant no decals.

So 'C = cut and printed' means they're regular stickers?

  • Even with wet spray, many UK painters seem to struggle to apply any form of transfer or decal under clear coat. They often seem to stuff them up when they bake the frame after applying the lacquer.

  • ...
I have an Armourtex powder-coated Carlton frame with H lloyd cycles decals which are also adhesive backed.....Do it - you'll be chuffed once you have.
    [Post pix once you have].

+1 - exactly the same as me. No probs so far.

Just remember to make sure you place them in the correct place 1st... measure, check and double check, b/c whatever anyone says about spraying the area with water + fairy its really hard to move or adjust the decals once on.

  • oh yeah - and get something hard and plastic (think i used a credit card) to smooth out the bubbles working from the centre out.

  • Spray water.
    Slide into place.
    Peel off backing paper.

    Ride.

  • Joel, that is one nice looking frame!

  • A few pointers...

Don't use waterslide transfers on powdercoat, make sure you get vynil.

Spray the adhesive side with water so that you can reposition if you don't quite get it right the first time, then smooth out and remove air bubbles and water using a credit card or similar.

For lug lining, try using a Zig paint pen from a hobby shop (Hobbycraft sell them). This is a lot easier than a brush. If you get it wrong, simply wipe off with white spirit and try again.

    Good luck.

    Good tip, thanks!

  • Powder coating was mistake. Decals or transfers should be of the gold sized varnish type

  • has anyone successfully got decals on to powdercoat but under the laquer?

or is it easier to make a mask and use spray paint?

Jol, looks pretty spanking that, was that spray water onto vinyl stickers to help slide into place and then smooth bubbles etc, rather than meaning water based transfers?

As for lug lining, I did mine yesterday with some model paint/laquer I got from a graphics shop and a 000 paintbrush, went on nice so there was no need for going over the line twice to get solid colour. Steady hand required for sure, and it brought back a few airfix model esque memories but the brush tip is finer than I think you'd get with a pen.

will post some pics when I get chance

  • When I worked at a sign-maker's quite a few of the guys I worked with sprayed water onto the surface of big jobs before laying the vinyl, it allowed a bit of repositioning to be done where required and when you squeegee out from the centre the water usually carries the small air bubbles that get trapped with it. I never bothered with wet applications but It seemed to work absolutely fine and have no long term adhesive issues.

  • Any ideas on where I could get custom replacement bike decals to stick on a frame after a re-spray.

  • This ebay seller has lots of originals: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/decals2000/

I used some of this to make some replacement Donohue transfers, when they weren't availble. It works well.

  • Do you mean 'custom' as in "Ashleyh's Bike Rules OK" or do you mean actualy replacing your old decals with the same?

If its the later UTFS (hint H Lloyde)...

*... *If its the former, then again UTFS and you'll find somone on here who can cut vin'l decals.

But again UTFS!!! - so many really, really useful threads on this - read them all first!

  • If you are after replacing your old decals this is a pretty good site they have modern and vintage styles and they also do some custom stuff too! bit of everything really!

    http://www.wanit.co.uk/

  • i want some BOB griffin decals, and Apologies, I did not see the thread that goes into decals in depth.
    Thanks

  • Lloyds FTW

  • How do people do this? I want something multi-coloured, high res, pukka, which won't fade. It'll have lacquer over it. The paint shop I'm going to (Dave at Colour-Tech) says he can either do single colour laser cut stickers, or paint things by hand. He suggests www.hlloydcycles.com for fancy custom stuff. Somebody else suggested www.zazzle.co.uk - upload an image and they put it on a sticker for you. Somebody else said I can print stickers or waterslide decals on my own inkjet/laser printer if I buy special paper.

  • Oh dear, looks as if this thread will be me talking to myself. So,um...the stickers at zazzle look good but they're 4 mm thick. I wonder if they'll look professional when the bike's lacquered? Or will they just look like rubbish stickers?

  • Search is your friend.

  • Thank you sir, you're a gent!
