I didn't see the posts objecting to youngie's posts earlier, but when I saw them they were already immediately relevant to the topic of this thread--and I'm pretty sure that I saw them before they were edited. Yes, s/he does mention the stolen bikes in passing, but I thought that was quite legitimate, given that the theft was the reason why s/he was on the bus stopped at the scene of the collison? Maybe I missed something.
Cheers fella - no biggy just don't want to come on here as a new member and seem like and ass!

Youngie, don't want to continue to chastise you any further, but please read back carefully through the threads, the partner of the driver is / was on here and so talk of punishment for the driver is not really appropriate. The facts are not known and so we should'nt judge.

My name is Anish Patel and I am the husband of Catriona . On Monday 29th June at around 08.20, Catriona died as a result of a collision with a green Tipper lorry at Kennington Park Road, at the junction with Harleyford Street. I would like to make a personal appeal for anyone who was in the Oval area that morning , who saw Catriona or the tipper, to come forward as a potential witness. Even if you did not see the incident directly, you may still have useful information on the lead up to, or aftermath of the incident. So, please, I urge you to come forward. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, may be crucial to the case. I and the entire family would like to understand what happened on that day and you may have seen something that is relevant. Please contact the Collision Investigation Unit Witness Line on 020 8941 9011 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you have any information. Many thanks, Anish.

My partner was the driver of the Lorry which was in the accident on Monday where sadly a woman cyclist died. I have read all the posts about this and some have been quite upsetting as a lot of comments have been way off the mark. My partner had not been drinking all night, he was safely tucked up in bed at 9pm watching TV with a cup of tea. He is an experienced HGV driver of 20yrs and has never had an accident. The cyclist came up on his left side and has sais he simply did not see her,he did check his mirror but she was in his blind spot. I have researched this and a lot of accidents have happened this way. He was arrested, this would be normal practise after an accident of this nature, the police are now conducting an investigation. He is traumatised and our lives will never be the same again. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this terrible time.
Julie - Thank you for posting. poor coverage and assumptions make villians of those who are involved in an accident, this is a terrible thing to have on yours and your partners mind. Please take the comments on here as venting, many in-experienced cyclists feel fear when riding and this often comes out in frustration and anger. when someone dies on the road this fear and anger bubbles over.
But you are right - this is an all to common accident and if it is to go away lorry drivers and cyclists should work together to force better equiped lorries and better prepared cyclists.
Kind regards
Pip -

Well the CPS rejected Julie's partner's guilty plea of causing death by careless driving, and are prosecuting for death by dangerous driving as they believe they have evidence of him being on a mobile phone and wish to produce toxicology evidence showing he was still under the influence of drink.

Really glad the CPS are not taking the easy option. It seems they are really trying to do something about left turning lorries.
I hope it doesn't drag on too long for all those involved.

this just in on the lcc news letter
Lorry driver alleged to have been drinking and phoning during crash
A lorry driver who killed a cyclist in a collision at the Oval junction in south London in June 2009 is to stand trial for causing death by dangerous driving.
Prosecutors claim CCTV shows the driver was using his mobile phone at the time of the crash and that he was also found to be under the influence of alcohol. The cyclist, Catriona Patel, was described after the crash by her husband Mr Anish Patel as “a strong cyclist who would think nothing of a 100-mile ride up and down mountains – always with a smile.”

It's been confirmed that the driver is going to be charged for using a phone when the crash happened. The CCTV evidence is apparently clear enough to make a case.
good to hear.

A tipper truck driver crushed a City boss to death under the wheels of his HGV while chatting on his mobile phone, a court heard.
Dennis Putz, 51, was over the legal drink drive limit when he hit cyclist Catriona Patel, 39, as he accelerated away from a set of traffic lights outside Oval tube station in south London.
Ms Patel, a keen cyclist who lived in Clapham, south London, was pronounced dead at 11.30am after being airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, where surgeons battled in vain to save her life.
He has admitted making a call on his mobile phone at the time of the accident, which was captured on CCTV, but insists he was using a hands-free kit.
A police officer at the scene smelt alcohol on his breath while a member of the public told investigators Putz looked 'flustered', the court heard.
Jonathan Polnay, prosecuting, said the driver's was breath-tested 80 minutes following the crash, returning a reading of 39mg in 100ml of breath.
The legal limit is 35mg.
He said: 'A forensic scientist has concluded that at the time of the crash, his alcohol breath reading was likely to have been 49mg - 50 per cent over the drink-drive limit.' Putz denied drinking that morning but said he had consumed seven pints of Guinness the previous day, stopping at around 9pm.

"Julie"- Putz's wife, has posted in defence of him across a few cycling forums.
What she wrote appears to be a load of rubbish.

Actually, come to think of it, I think Julie's posts are a criminal act.

This development should be contrasted with the ill-informed discussion which occurred on the London Fixed-gear & Single-speed website discussion thread after the killing of Catriona Patel. There was anger by some commenters but there were also commenters who were quick to blame the victim and to call for more “education” of cyclists.
Most disturbingly of all there was this post, which successfully defused the anger and deflected attention away from the possible culpability of the driver:
