Not necessarily so......if you have a 'Brooks bottom'.....these saddles are comfortable virtually immediately......i recently got a Brooks Pro [chopped by Skully]....to make it Swallow like...though not brand new....it was/is like new...hard and no give like a wooden board...but totally comfortable.......so i would not ditch it....yet.....just my £0.02
