Clear-coating bicycle frames

Posted on
  • So, I have bought an old rusty frame. It's really very rusty, and it has a small crack on the seat-tube, just below the pinch bolt. I am having it blasted so that the crack can be repaired, and so i can see if there is any other damage.

My original plan was to get it blasted, repaired, and then clear-coated. But i have been told by a painter that rust will still appear under the clear (lacquer) coat - even if there are shed loads of coats. Has anyone had any experience of this? What have people used to clear coat frames?

The man i spoke to said that the only way to properly protect the frame from rust was to put a base layer of paint on it...

    Thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

  • clear powdercoat will be fine.

if you want a glossy finish, bead blast it, dont sand blast it.

  • Clear coat is paint.....

The only difference is that under a coloured coat, you won't see the rust forming until it bubbles.

  • Hmm, well i was under the impression that there are a fair few types of paint, lacquer being one of them. I wasn't aware that you could get a clear powder coat... that might be what i end up doing. Don't really have a choice in regards to blasting.
My dad actually has a bead-blaster, but the cabinet is slightly too small for a frame (which is a complete cnut). Think it's being sand blasted though i can't be sure.

  • There might be many types of paint, but clear coat is just paint without pigment. Mixing paint types is generally bad news because there can be chemical reactions between them, so it would be rare nowadays to paint and then lacquer with something which is a different type of paint. No paint which is designed to be a top surface should be porous (unlike primer and filler which can be.) Blasting has a reputation for causing later rust, which is probably more of a risk with a home version than a professional one.
