My younger daughter commented, shortly after her 16th birthday, a year and a half ago:
"You know when you are getting old when paedophiles no longer find you attractive."
She sounds like she's got a decent sense of humour.Totally unrelated paedophile comment: spotted in sainsburys, woman with screaming toddler in trolley, when at till. She turns to him and squawks "If you don't shut up the fucking paedophiles are gonna get ya!"
First class parenting.

She does.
Clearly doesn't get it from her parents. The benefits of boarding school.

i live in angel and although i haven't lost a bike off the street (been in the area off and on for 10 years) i have had bikes stolen from our locked front "yard" type area.
if i'm going to leave a bike on the street i usually go for the most blatant busiest place i can, and somewhere it looks like i'm watching it, like right outside the door of a busy pub where people are on the street, outside sainsbury's local (where it looks like you'll be out in 2 minutes) or upright to a lamp-post by a busy shop door, pref one with security. seems to have worked so far. the bike racks outside tesco on the corner of essex road have a security guard checking over then and the new rack outside browns on the green have the diners on the outside tables as a deterent. it helps if your bike's a heap of scratched up creaky old shit too.
or yep, get the bus.

I go to the Vue a lot and normally lock it on the railings outside the Starbucks. I hope this gives the impression that I am in Starbucks or one of the plenty of other nearby coffee places. Again I am always nervous but i refuse to let thieves dictate where and when I can ride my bike (which sadly Im sure I will inevitably regret!)
O..The Moon is amazing. One of my films of the Year. Hopefully this will get Sam Rockwell some deserved recognition.

I used to work at City Uni which is in Angel/Clerkenwell border - If you don't mind walking a wee bit, then you can cycle down St. John's Street and park it in City University bike park (Northampton Square) - they have about 87489479827 cameras trained on the area and security guards and loads of bikes parked there.
That said, my mate lost an old Dawes from there and no one (security/cameras) had a lot to say...

Well I ended up just walking. Not too bad really as it was a nice afternoon. And movie was good too. So good to see a film not ruined by cgi. It really did have the feel of the older sci-fi. A blend between Alien and 2001. very cool.
The best bit is I picked up my new mini fah. ( already struggled to find an easy way to get wheel/seatpost/and immovable object all fitting in) So should be a bit safer now.

There's nowhere good round there to park - both t'missus and I have had components pinched from outside Sainsers/Waitrose.
-
• #34
Isn't it nice that there is now a Waitrose at Angel. So much nicer than the more convenient and closer Holloway Road ;o)
-
• #35
That and the Holloway Rd Waitrose has exemplary bike parking.

To be fair I didn't read the thread properly the first time, I wouldn't leave it there with those locks. With a NY fahg and a fahg chain, bit different.
Chummy Lover Boy lost a bike just there.

lock with mini d outside n1 centre or on handrail next to borders, never had a problem, but my bike looks like a piece of shit

Are we allowed to dig out 2 day old threads? I'm still not sure what's the safest option, this or starting a new thread. I have the flamed fear.
Anyway,
I'm doing a course in Brixton in a while and they're strict about allowing bikes on the premises. So I have the options of:
Locking my fixed up outside and crossing fingers.
Dusting off my road bike, locking it up outside and crossing fingers.
Accepting the fact that the chances of either bike getting stolen that's left outside for a few hours is quite high and taking PT.What do you reckon?

where's the college? there's very few places left to lock up in brixton at the mo - all the sheffield racks are full...
-
• #43
Brixton is also rife with thieves, beware.
I work here and the only thing I would leave in the street would be the tattiest piece of shit with every component painted in fluorescent orange or yellow.
Maybe with two locks and ball-bearings you could get away with right out front of the Ritzy.
Thankfully I walk to work everyday.

Electric Lane, right in the thick of it. I'll be there in the evening for a couple of hours for a few weeks, just as it's getting nice and dark.
-
• #45
Indeed, there's even someone's new (fixed) bike being slowly stripped outside the ritzy at the mo.
I'll leave mine outside M&S for ten minutes, but i've had bikes nicked from the main drag before. Beware the EuroSmackHeads...
Outside Brixton Cycles maybe, if its just daytime?
-
• #46
God, someone's being robbed up as we speak?
it's from 6-9pm, late Sept so it'll be getting dark.
Looks like I'm taking PT then, which is capital shite. -

At the photography place?
Its the same as anywhere else - a wheel goes, owner leaves it there overnight and something else goes missing, bit by bit until its just a frame left.
There's some bike racks outside the police station on Brixton Road. 5 mins away from electric avenue. With two locks and a plastic bag over the saddle, you might be safe?
-
• #48
Yeah, Photofusion. I asked them if I could take my bike in and they said no as there's lots of cyclists and they have to leave them outside the Ritzy. Fair enough.
I also have the same problem with going to Central St. Martins in a while.
Maybe I'll take the road bike and leave it outside the Politzi station then.
Maybe.
Thanks for the advice Snowy. -

Befriend people at the Albert pub on Coldharbour Lane and lock it up against their railings? There's often a polo bike or two locked there.

the big tescos on Acre Lane has bike parking... they don't lock the gates up til 10.
i lost my keys in tescos once (dont ask me how) and had to leave my bike there all day (10 til 8ish), it was fine..... and that was my fancy pants bling bling bike, that i dont normally leave leave more than 2 meters from where i am sat.
they have security that patrol around the bike racks now and then. is it every night during the week, or just one night a week?
I've locked near the Sainsbury's a few times and been ok with my Krypto. Could lock it up right outside the po po on Tolpuddle Street?
