Wed night Regents Park training

  • Now the Wednesday League has finished for the year I'm going to need some replacement training time, at least until after the September Omniums.

    I sometimes do some laps of regents park but was hoping some others would join me for some more structured training for an hour or two.
    The inner circle is almost exactly 1km and has few cars. I was thinking something along the lines of 20 mins warm up laps followed by some 1lap hard, 1 lap easy, or sprint every lap for 10 laps. Or something like that, some kind of interval training anyway.

    Anyone interested? Probably need lights.

  • Sounds good. I always need to work on my endurance. 1km loops could be good for that.

    Do you do it on road or track gearing?

  • Watch out for other groups of riders with similar ideas. It can get a bit busy midweek evenings.

    I'd recommend medium gearing, mainly to cap maximum speeds in case random peds/squirrels/etc leap out at you - it does happen from time to time.

  • Ride to East drinks, carb load on beer, ride back.
    Surely that's enough training?

  • I ride fixed, I reckon high 70" would be good? or lowish 80's.
    I think the London Phoenix ride there Monday nights but they go clockwise. I prefer anti for 2 reasons, 1 its more like the track, and 2. it means you dont have to deal with cars turning in or out of the road (there are no exits going to the centre of the park)
    And yes, there is always the option to top up on carbs at the pub later.

  • If it's winter training, surely high 60s/low 70s would be better? Apart from the safety aspect (I've only ever ridden a/c, but shit still happens), shouldn't you be babying your knees during the winter, and working on leg speed + snap?

  • What about the Outer circle? Is it too busy? I know it has a couple of lights but depending on what you are doing and where you are throwing in recovery they might not be a problem.

  • The newish pinch points have made it a little more hazardous. It's fine for the odd lap of recovery, just to break the tedium of the Inner Regentodrome.

  • Regular training sounds awesome. So, I'd like to get in on this.

    Currently riding 49x16 (82").

    Newish pinch points?

  • Just thinking about race training at the moment for the last few September Omniums/League final on Saturday. So still looking at leg strength/sprint, endurance, etc. When winter comes maybe longer, spinnier outer laps would be better.

  • Newish pinch points?

  • Err.. so Regent's Park has roadworks going on?

  • No, pinch points are permanent traffic calming measures, as described here;

    http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf/LookupWebPagesByTITLE_RTF/Pinch-points?opendocument

    and here's a pic to illustrate;

  • That's what I meant, couldn't find a proper picture.

  • I tend to do laps of the outher circle about 2 or 3 times a week from about 6.15.

  • Ah right, so pinch point = where cockfiend in car squeezes innocent cyclist into horrible gutter + bollard crash? Sounds like a great traffic calming measure.

  • More 'enlightened' councils put bike paths inside the pinch point to allow cyclists to bypass them without losing speed. Then put a give way line just after them, thus adding a second cycling only pinch point. Cocks.

  • Meh.. looks like a normal road to me. I'd be taking the lane anyway. Wide arse ftw.

  • Outer circle isn't usually busy,

  • I will be up for this Tom. Will stick a 49x16 gearing on until it gets colder. get myself some decent lights and glasses too.

  • Nice one. James said he'd be up for it the other night too. Any good training plan ideas welcome, Guy, Marco, Mike, whoever.

  • I might be up for this. I've much less riding than I anticipated this year and need to get moving again. What sort of kick-off time are you looking at?

  • Quite fancy this but I'm a noob so probably wouldn't manage a whole hour
