i live in angel and although i haven't lost a bike off the street (been in the area off and on for 10 years) i have had bikes stolen from our locked front "yard" type area.
if i'm going to leave a bike on the street i usually go for the most blatant busiest place i can, and somewhere it looks like i'm watching it, like right outside the door of a busy pub where people are on the street, outside sainsbury's local (where it looks like you'll be out in 2 minutes) or upright to a lamp-post by a busy shop door, pref one with security. seems to have worked so far. the bike racks outside tesco on the corner of essex road have a security guard checking over then and the new rack outside browns on the green have the diners on the outside tables as a deterent. it helps if your bike's a heap of scratched up creaky old shit too.
or yep, get the bus.
